A Time Weight of 1, 2, or 3 is assigned to each applicable violation based on how long ago it was recorded. Violations recorded in the past six months receive a time weight of 3. Violations recorded over six months and up to 12 months ago receive a time weight of 2. All violations recorded earlier (older than 12 months but within the past 24 months) receive a time weight of 1. This time-weighting places more emphasis on recent violations relative to older violations.
3. SMS BASIC Prioritization Status Methodology Table 3–14. Safety Event Groups for the Vehicle Maintenance BASIC Safety Event Group Number of Relevant Inspections
The table didn't copy.
The way I understand the SMS methodology. The CSA score for maintenance, you need 5 inspections before a score is calculated.

Drivers for large carriers are not the only ones getting in accidents.
Are the numbers skewed, perhaps. I have not researched any data to find out.
I have been caught like you have with a leaking fitting and the inspector let me fix it. I was given an OOS.
He did not inspect my repair. I'm guessing he/they figure if we lied and got caught with the same repair needed. We would get put OOS again and may be ticketed for driving a truck put OOS and not fixing it.
Many years ago before CSA, if you could repair any minor problems. Most DOT would let you go with only a written or most likely a verbal warning.
Since the start of CSA the violations I have received, none were attached to a dollar citation.
I think I've had 2 OOS and 3 maybe 4 warnings.
I see it as just a part of doing business.
Yep a light can go out anytime. That is why I changed all my lights to led. The other stuff, I keep up on the Pre maintenance, like you do.
Somedays it just seems the world is out to get us. Most days I feel satisfied that I won the battle. Fit to go another day.
Good Luck.singlescrewshaker and HopeOverMope Thank this. -
Do the officers get brownie points from the CSA for writing up bulloney violations too?
I got shafted by an inspector today at a scale in Iowa, he straight up lied on inspection report. Wrote me up for a faulty license plate light, I was stupid enough to sign the report before checking myself.
On my way back to the truck I look and the light is working, didnt even touch it. I go back and tell him the light works, he says “it wasn’t working while I was doing the inspection”
It must’ve fixed itself while he was doing the paperwork...singlescrewshaker and HopeOverMope Thank this. -

I think I might have some of my info wrong. It’s not a matter of 1,000 trucks, 250 OOS = 25% OOS. It’s the inspections I think. 1,000 inspections, 250 OOS would equal 25% OOS.
so I guess I just need more inspections. It’s still skewed in favor of large companies. They have more trucks = more inspections = higher chance of a new truck being inspected = lower chance of OOS.
I know some customers look at csa scores but I think mainly it’s the OOS rate they look at? And I think that’s separate of csa I can’t tell yet. I looked at the report too, he didn’t even write the right brake chamber size down lol. He said I had all type 30, when my back axle are type 24. Big difference in size! “Throw out the inspection in the case of a technicality, the whole report is false now! Lol” (maybe?)
oh and I pulled swifts data. 2,379 OOS in two years (with NEW TRUCKS) , 40 fatality accidents, 435 injury accidents, 1066 tow away accidents, 1,541 total accidents. 13.9% OOS rate. Safe guys right there lol!singlescrewshaker Thanks this. -
