I am looking for pros and cons on the 444, I've drove an N14 but not 444.
I know many people hate the 444 but why?
Or maybe compare the 444 to a big cam 400?
If this is wrong forum please move to proper area.

Step timing control issues caused many to smoke white until warmed up completely ... The one I drove pulled very hard but it was tweaked by the boss..

Lots of folks had problems with the low flow cooling on the 444, plus the above mentioned step timing was problemetic, and many mechanics never fully understood it.
    Personally I would not compare a 444 to an N14, I would much rather have a good BC111 400 than a 444 myself.

From what I can find is keep oil clean in 444 and it will work well?
Yet I've never drove a mechanical engine. And I fear lead footing until a meltdown happens.
Some engines that I've studied like the 6v71 and other 2 stroke Detroit's you just went full throttle or things broke.
And I think N14 can make more power way easier than a NTC 444 so I lean towards that maybe.
Mind you I have a 11.1 60 series at home in a ugly truck. And have owned 1 other 12.7 Detroit truck.
My goal is a cabover with a dependable engine for pulling stuff on the highway.
    And up hills.

I had a old flatbed with a two stroke Detroit in it and you had to drive that thing like a gas engine, rev the piss out of it.

To the op, I would stay away from the 444. The above mentioned timing issues are going to constantly make you think you have a failing pump.

Yes I did, it got about 6mpg. C70 with a four speed trans and a splitter, 24' steel rollback. Truck was a turd lol. I had a bunch of old trucks I fixed up because I was doing car restoration and liked hauling them on old trucks, that one was my least favorite. I had a old cabover Ford with a 351 that was converted to propane that was pretty cool and another C70 that was gas and a much better truck.
