It still takes compression for a jake to work just at the top of stroke does the jakes open exhaust valves to cancel dentonation .

Basically yes, keep in mind the old jakes reduce the injector travel as well, not all but do minimize travel, and as Northern said it cracks the exhaust as the piston reaches the top. On the old cummins I'm thinking the jakes set at 0.017 or 0.019 for some reason. Been a while since I fooled with any of it, but I will be getting my own refresher course soon as I continue to switch it all over on my own engine....
Be careful out there.
rank Thanks this. -
So C-Brake and Jacobsen etc etc work the same....i.e cracking the exhaust at the TDC?

Engine brake has no effect on injector travel. The injector goes through its normal stroke. The lift of the injector rocker arm is used to compress oil trapped above the master piston. This high pressure oil is then directed to the slave piston to open the exhaust valve.

Money for money I would go with an older 838 or 855. Parts are insanely cheap for the older cummins. You can build an old cummins to scream, it might only last 250-300k before a rebuild but they are cheap. My dad had a formula 315 that was turned up by the guy that had it before. No Idea what was done to it but it out pulled ntc 400s and stayed right with a 444 that my dads friend ran. 9 speed direct with 3.55 good for about 65-66mph

Been up all night at the hospital and I'm not even aware of where I'm at.....rank Thanks this.

Those older engines are really cool. We had an early 80's IH in the shop today with an ntc 400. I forgot how nice those engines sound. Puts a smile on your face when you snap the throttle.

Thank you Rank, a friend of my wife's family who never married or had any children has been with my wife and I for about 4 years. Dementia is taking it's toll on him as well as age in general ( 86 yrs old ) and I fear the reaper is near. We have been taking turns setting up at night at the hospital and trying to work during the day, it is taking it's toll on us. I haven't had a chance to work on my truck since last Saturday dealing with all this, I don't worry about myself but I do worry about my wife, she has heart problems of her own and is wearing herself down. Be careful out there everyone, and have a good weekend.
