I marked mine as well, at disassembly.

Bearing erosion/washout and parasitic power loss. Bearing washout pretty much stopped after the drop.

I’m thinking my cpl160 was set at .040 when my Uncle overhauled it in 1992. He removed the compression release shaft and freeze plugged the holes. Same thing the Cummins Recon would have done. They were removing them later in life with different timing sets and the bc2 conversation. It fires up cold rather easy on 3 batteries and converted to 12v system. Little visual white haze of smoke under light bulbs when cold.

Did the BC1’s have the same oil pump as a small cam. I got what I believe is a BC 2 but could be a 1, with a 11/81 date of manufacture. 06ACBD0D-EED4-4B5C-9505-EA2A4F1E2DB8.jpeg 28472B93-CA21-4B13-8DDD-6C47AACCA00C.jpeg

It’s a simple deal your all your doing is measuring lift on cam follower at true TDC. moving the follower box in or out with gasket/shims to what Cummins wants for that CPL. some times you have to split the difference between the two cylinders. I have also changed the offset key in the gear to get them dead nuts. You cannot spend too much time right here or rush. Timing is everything in how a motor performs

I pressed off the cam gear and removed the offset key. The 217 CPL cam key, has an offset. The 160 CPL cam key is a straight key. Looked like a plain woodruff key but I double and triple checked the part number in the Cummins CPL book. Got the key directly from Cummins.

I’m not sure what all thicknesses the cam follower gaskets come in but I guess it’d be best to get multiples of each thickness.

Looks like that engine started out as a Formula 300 with 1800 rpm max rating with a different cpl and some time in its life it was overhauled to a cpl 160 350. Look at the stamps. Original Cummins stamps were raised from the back side of tag. Someone hacked up the new numbers. The adv. hp should say 350 at 2100 rpm. if it were original cpl 160.

Ideally go as thick as possible with first one then step all way down to .005 I think it’s been several years.

I pretty sure it’s restamped CPL 450, but could be wrong. It is restamped 350 and was originally a 300. It’s a BC engine so I don’t think it’s a CPL 160. Could be wrong on what’s stamped though.
