anyway, Rawzy in his own guidance mentioned turbo to be replaced just on 500,000 mark. Egr-deleted or not.

Rawze, what's your 20?
Thanks for all your insight and help brother!
I read every post in this thread, watched all the videos on EGR tune up.
We bought a 2010 386 Pete with ISX 450, 13 spd out of FL. last month. Super clean southern truck.
Bobtailed it back to NJ, 12 mpg! Not one problem, no fault codes.
Took a couple of days at the shop to go over everything. New front brakes and drums, Drag link was all it needed on the surface.
Blew lower radiator hose waiting for first load, 10 gallons of coolant all over the parking lot...
All hoses are going to be changed this week.
Joy turned to distress as reality slapped me up side the head.
It started throwing codes Thursday, 1664 after treatment not present, fault 4214, 2637.
I couldn't start parked regen.Trotted it in to Cummins for diagnostic since my shop is not up to speed with this engine and emission system.
After 6 hours of waiting for diagnostic and estimate, " Your ,Doser and DOC needs to be replaced. $5500 . surprise, surprise!
Unit has 1 year on new head and DPF. Why it was needed is unknown but have the documentation to back it up.
My guess is high heat load. = cracked head
Truck ran from FL - CA since new. I thought we were good to go, WRONG!
We are going to do the EGR tune up, purchase Insite software and do the work at our shop.
At 550 k miles, a bad head, I'm thinking the DOC will need to be done soon but not today.
ECM is up to date.
Does anyone have the MPG calibration and mapping for VGT?
Truck will be running regional, 55-65 mph @ 1400 rpm most of the time.
So glad I found this tread!
Any help is appreciated! -
I would start with just the doser, it's easy to change and it can cause lots of regen problemsthe247trucker Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the much needed info . no one has addressed the high oil temps associated with the cm870( i have an '07 w900L) . Should a guy really use a temp gun? I have a pyro and boost guage, also what "ecm flash" should a guy get after blocking egr? Can it be done with those insite packages from Hong Kong on e-bay? Thanks from Squamish,BC

Looking at eBay and Amazon most of the Insite software is coming out of Hong Kong. I have never had good luck buy stuff from over seas on eBay. Any one have a link or referral to where they got theirs?

Doser and rest of the EGR tune up are on the short list. I called Cummins this morning for more detail on the forced regen. I asked for the hpa or kpa number.
Stumped them with that, they did call me back after 4 hours. All thanks to everything I read on this thread!
They were able to give me the back pressure reading, 1.9 ! Temps were 600 at DOC, 900 and 1050 on DPF. Regen was successful. So is my DOC really shot?
Glad I had the time to do some homework.
Has anybody tried the Roadwarrior DOC or any other aftermarket replacements? $1960 vs $3030 from Cummins. -
yes the road warrior dpfs are worth looking into as long as they can cross the oem # over

The $1960 price was from searching my Cummins part#. This will be the last thing I do. We did the NJ smoke test today. Truck blew between 0 and .04% opacity. 20% is the limit.
My conclusion is the canister and EGR is in as good shape that anyone buying a used truck can hope for. I'm not going to book any loads to CA anytime soon. I didn't leave anything there I need to go back for, only a couple of grand in Reno and Vegas I might stop and visit.
The goal is to take it step by step. gradually widening the range as performance and reliability prove out.
I think too many people put the cart ahead of the horse. Way back when, you could take a 3406b or Big cam from one corner of the country to another.
But fuel was $1.00 or less, 4-5 mpg was the norm, repairs were few or none on a well maintained truck.
Today that can spell BANKRUPT before you know it. That's one place I don't want to visit!
