As this thread is to debate about engines,i felt it might help the debate if i asked some questions that would lead us to some interesthing answers.
Which it did.(i hope)
And for that we thank you,Rawze.Rawze Thanks this. -
Rawze, if you were going to design the perfect modern Diesel engine you'd keep the vg turbo? Ditch the egr and get it to run clean enough so no dpf would be needed.. ..and make 600hp with 13 liters.
ps your nemesis has their act together with the yellow crowd . But that's off topic.Rawze Thanks this. -

I took my exhaust pipe apart a while back to do a turbo impeller inspection. After 520k miles, the inside of it, and the back of the turbo were a dull red-ish color from minor surface rust. Not black, like I would have expected. As well, it takes about 15-18k miles for my oil to turn dark. I use Rotella, so its not because of some high dollar synthetic.Last edited: Oct 2, 2013

Thanks for all the advice and I plan to follow it, but can I get a more detailed description about where these sensors and tubes and whatnot are and what they look like. I don't know one sensor from the other. This is in an '06 Pete. The engine was replaced 600 miles before I bought it , at the cummins house in Mesa AZ. That was in Feb. and they drove it straight to Midland tx where I bought it. Since this was a genuine cummins out of frame overhaul (short block, head and tubo.) I wonder how much of this stuff was done and how much was missed. As I said before I've owned caterpillers for years. I haven't owned a cummins since the mid 90's and it was an older truck with a big cam 1 it. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You folks seem to know way more about how these computer engines work than I do. But I did just clean my IMAP sensor. Turning wrenches is something I understand. As for the rest of those parts on the motor to take off an clean..... They've all been replaced in the last 6 months. I just signed on to this forum and read this thread. Very very informative. I really like the idea of setting at home, cleaning parts and drinking beer. Too bad I'm in CO not NC. I can't private message anyone yet, but I am interested in learning more about being able to monitor my engine via laptop. Help would be appreciated.
I tried clicking these links to PDF files to read what is there, and nothing shows up or it says file not found. I bookmarked the videos so I can watch them later.
Thanks for what you guys doing.DocRox Thanks this.
