DEF does begin to freeze at 12F and this is a normal condition and the system is designed to handle the DEF when it is frozen. There is no need to take preventative action for freezing DEF other than starting and running the truck as normal. The tanks are plastic to allow for expansion during cold temps as well as to handle the corrosive nature of the fluid. The system is also designed to thaw the DEF before injection into the exhaust stream or before system priming even begins.
I have seen the results of adding alcohol, HEET, fuel treatments to DEF and the results are system replacement of every component that DEF contacts in most cases. Attempting to thaw the tank with an external heat source is also a waste of time and pointless. NEVER add anything to a DEF tank that is not clean 32.5 percent DEF!!!!!
Back to the Idle speed.......I would suggest Idle up for warm up operation only. Truthfully the fastest way to warm a Diesel engine is to put it under a load. As long as the windows are clear and the air system is charged, put her to work. Higher rpm during extended idle times does nothing to create more cylinder temps or DPF temps. Only more wear caused by more revolutions and more unburned fuel going out the pipe to the DPF. My 2 cents......Stay warm brothers.....

@HalpinUout try not to set like idle. Also you may want to take mandates off the engine. Also show the oil pump for more oil pressure. And use 1 gallon of gear oil at oil interval. And do not do the 50,000 oil interval as Cummins recommends. @Justrucking2 can give you more info on this. I've never owned an isx. And do not plan on it.

Gear oil in the motor?????
Oxbow Thanks this. -
It is a Rawze thing. Seems to work him. Do your research and do what is best for you! Idling bad, high idle better, Apu better yet, no idle best!

I have a cm2350 and this week has idled 3 nights so far. Which makes 4 for the life of it. It will not idle unless cruise is on and set, it runs at 900rpm, there is an epa setting in there that won't let it idle more than 5 min with cruise off. I won't do it unless batteries need charged up or I am sleeping and it dips below about -20c or -4f. No regens requested yet. 292000 km. 3950 engine hours. It varies the egr I think when it idles, must be doing it's own regen, it never changes the rpm. It does not show any indication it's doing it, I am just guessing by the sound it makes. Only way I know is sometimes i catch it in the middle of a burn if I stop wherever. That's only happened a few times.
I have a bunk heater only, no engine heater or apu and it never gets plugged in. A.c. in summer for sleeping is not an issue for me.
This trip I used a bit less than 1/2 a tank (medium 20 gal I think) of def for about 3700 km. I usually get 3200 km and then it is almost empty. Not sure if the level will drop dramatically tonight when it warms enough to thaw it. Wondering if I got super def or if it's frozen really good in there or what. Maybe isx turns def system off if below a certain temperature. It was -25 to -30c for the entire trip.HalpinUout, Dave_in_AZ and Oxbow Thank this. -
Freezing weather doesn't help with DPF either IMO, because it's always getting the freezing cold air on it.
From everything I have gathered, I'll probably just buy a new one when it's time and not even fool around trying to clean this one.
I'm guessing it's the original. I'm at 460K now almost.
Our Freightliner sucks hairy ####, so it's a terrible risk having them fool with it.HalpinUout Thanks this. -
I warm mine up for a good 15 minutes though when I crank her up.
Despite our esteemed colleague's advice, I'm not jumping on my motor when it's cold like that.
I cruise out and through the truck stop at like 1200 rpm in 4th for another good 5 minutes to warm her up.just_sayin and Goodysnap Thank this. -
