What is that big threaded area in the side of the front case?
-
I meant tommy keep bolts tight as he has extra bracket.I have Detroit w/ similar problem eating into front cover. I’ve been shimming w/ washers and replacing bolts for 10 yrs. Looking for ideas to fix once and for all. Currently needs repair. Been about 8 mos broken bolts again.Gonna use locktite this time. Eventually remove front cover to do bull gear and beef up bracket add? Extra support. It’s a common problem. Freightliner blames Detroit Good Lucktommymonza Thanks this.

Used to work in a fleet of them and the NTC's. The front covers were not normally a problem if the support brackets are kept in place. Never welded on the cover much for fear of damaging the gasket. I have made a 3/8's plate to go on top with three holes in it. Installed three studs with lock tight. Bolt the plate down with the inside bolt tight and the other two just snug. Make and install a 1/2" plate to the outside mounting hole. Weld the two plates together. Remove it and weld the inside corner. Make sure the top of it is flat and reinstall the compressor bracket on top of it. Use nylock nuts on top of flat washers. Only tighten the bolt with no support under it to about 25 FT LB. That is a lot less expensive than a front cover job even if you go to a rotary compressor.tommymonza and Rideandrepair Thank this.

That is a 5/8 threaded hole that intersects the 1/2" hole from the compressor bracket. Cutting a piece of steel plate to weld to the bottom of the ac bracket to run a bolt into that hole for better support.Rideandrepair and tommymonza Thank this.
