Definitely removing valve covers at a minimum tomorrow to see if I see anything. I did notice coolant dripping from the exhaust. But not sure if it was from internally or externally.

My quick glances on the side of the road between calling towing, rentals, and shops. It seemed like coolant blew from the front all over everything. I almost thought it was a failed water pump to start. Till I tried to restart it. Also when I pulled the dip stick it didn't really look that milky...lots of coolant externally all over the place. I was expecting the oil to be super milky but it wasn't. Going to check that again in the morning. Oil temp never got super hot and coolant temp never got super hot either. Coolant reservoir was empty when I opened it though. Plus the horrible clanky sounds and the engine not wanting to spin over with the starter.

Only had time to pull the dipstick this morning when I stopped by to grab my trailer. Oil is about 3-4 gallons over full. So there is the coolant. Didn't see any holes in the block. Honestly going to look into a Cummins reman. I need something fast and would prefer a decent warranty on it. Being that this was "overhauled" by a Peterbilt dealership before I got it and I assume popped a head gasket at 400k with no warning...I don't want to do this every 400k. These engines should go 800-900k.

Might also check on swapping in a Cat. Not so hard on older trucks. Peterbilt of Fort Smith usually has a 6NZ on the floor for low 40's

I was going to say I was open to swapping to a different engine. I have always had Cummins. But I would be open to a 60 series or a cat. I assume these freightliners had the option for a cat from the factory?

Yep. It would be easy to get a harness out of scrap yard for either Cat or Detroit. Keeps it clean and not looking Bubba'd

Whoops misclicked. I thought of that with the Detroit. They apparently make a harness as well for like 800 bucks brand new. If you had a pick of those 3 what is your preference? I have heard great stuff about 60 series and 3406. Haven't really heard much about 6nz. I am least familiar with car but I know people love them.

Me personally, Even as a Detroit guy, Cat longevity is better for an OO.

I would go Cat in a swap. Even thought about it myself the last few weeks. Keep core charge in mind when thining about a swap.

    Diesel Dave Thanks this.
