Cummins n14 celect plus 1999

    Hi , I just bought an Freightliner Century with an Cummins n14 plus on it , for over a month I’m trying to fix my jake brakes which will come on but don’t hold even my bobtail, yesterday my mechanic told me that this is how the jake brakes work on this old engines .... we replaced solenoids, wires, made adjustments, turbo boost is ok 27psi . Do I have to put some custom jake brakes on it ? Or change the Mecanic?

    Other than the durability I always thought that was one of the best features about the N14 celect plus was the Jake brake. The ones I drove there was no mistaking when they were on, especially bobtailing. I would have someone else good with Cummins look at it

    You need a mechanic, every major engine manufacturer for class 8 trucks had a pretty good compression brake in 1999.

    All the solenoid does is allow oil pressure to pass to the actuator that holds the valve open, hearing it click does not mean the actuator is properly adjusted or that the o-rings are good enough to let full oil pressure to the actuators.

    I would buy a rebuild kit for the Jake and find someone who knows how to put the kit in and adjust the whole rack including Jakes.

    I have the same motor, same year. My jakes were weak when I bought the truck. Did an inframe rebuild last year and now the jakes work awesome, even though I didn’t do anything to them.

    The more compression you have, the better they work.

    All good advice. You should also have someone run the overhead if you have not had it done.
