I just bought a '99 W9 with this same motor. I just want something reliable, decent fuel mileage, and cheap to work on. I was originally looking at Detroits, then the boss talked me into this one. He said "If I could have a whole fleet of pre-emission N-14's, I would."

    Good enough for me.

I should have it on the road after the first of the year.

I have a davco,so fs19764 or the Donaldson which I don't know it off top of my head.
Google the filter number to find the micron rating.

He's not wrong. You can do alot worse. They were all good back then tho. We had major injector problems with our '95 in the early days but the problem fixed itself. I always assumed it was a run of bad injectors buy maybe it was fuel as mentioned above. Never heard that before about the N14 but I would definately take it to heart.

N14 was one excellent motor !!!! Rock solid, strong pulling and great fuel mileage!

Wish they would've just improved it with a 24v head, etc. instead of building that POS ISX motor!

I had N14 in my last truck before I retired and really liked it. I put 1.5m miles on it with only minor issues. They do seem to find leaks but repairs are reasonable and easy to work on. I had 10 trucks in my 44 years and I would say I got the best cost per mile out of the N14 of any of them if I adjusted for inflation. Compared to this new crap out there today there is no comparison

They are 24 valve ,two intake and two exhaust per cylinder.
N14 are a solid engine, by no means perfect but about as good as they get.
In my opinion 60 series and cats tend to have less electrical and injector issues

I have 5 n14 engines and have had about twice that Many over the years. They are outstanding engines. The oil leaks are exactly like described above but it only gaskets and labor. They pull good and injectors are easy to swap if they do fail. They seem to be just as reliable as my Detroit series 60 trucks. I like both engines and have more than 5 of each. I have only one cat 3406e and it's a great engine and at 550 out pulls the rest but it's more money to work on.
