I was told that the best series of the N14 where made in 2001 and 2002...
What change was made in those years that made them better than earlier
year versions of the N14? If in fact they are better....

Celect Plus ECM, that supports J1939, but this ECM is not so dumb as Celect, but cant be controlled with VECU by J1939 and it was the reason why engine use was limited (for example cant be used with Version-2 volvo, cant be used with ZF Astronic tranny, cant be used in DAF after 2002). So this ECM was discontinued.
N14 required a lot of work to upgrade emission level over Euro-3.... but... Cummins provided HPI for future emission standards (EPA2005 and Euro-IV), so they introduced HPI, now HPI is too old, time of CRD and XPI.
So IMO, N14 is a good engine, I'd say classical engine. -
we bought an N14 last summer that had a noise in it. Turned out it had two blown head gaskets and the tops of two lines were gone.We did a complete overhaul on it sent the block to the machine shop and all new cummins parts.we have not put the engine into service yet it should hit the road the 2nd week of april My boy who has just turned 21 will be running it hauling steel.We have it set at 460 horse power and am hopeing for 6 mpg out of it. It is an older 1994 year engine and most people I talk to about it say they are reall good engines. We have a ton of money in this one and I believe it will be just fine.It was a private owner tractor for sale at a small shop who did all his work and I knew them also But they told me there was nothing wrong with that engine they are just noisy they said. That kinda upset me.

It was due for an overhaul anyway. Now you have a complete rebuild of a proven solid engine! You won't be disappointed!

The only thing I would strongly suggest is to clean all the grounds real good. Probably not a bad idea to replace (or start replacing) the wiring harnesses as well and the fuel lines. Others may have thoughts on this as well so ask and see what they think. -
And make sure whoever is doing the rebuild installs a new crankshaft damper. That gets overlooked quite frequently. Technically it should be changed at each 500,000 miles. Relatively inexpensive and quick to do.

we put a new dampener on it along with a new fuel pump injectors an ops ecopur bypass oil filter and a fass fuel system, water pump oil cooler and on and on
