We have a winner here! If I were to buy one, a 6NZ would be my purchase. I overhauled a buddy's 6nz with a hair over a million on it and it looked just great. Outside of replacing a couple injectors along the way and regular maintainance, he hadnt had a lick of trouble. If I had to find something a little newer, Id find a BXS because Ive never had many issues from them.
cummins or cat?

as a side thought, i have been wondering if the Window option, is caused by the low oil pressure...
i think that if i persure the road train work, i will try to get the oil pressure up..
so what if it costs a few hp, cant hurt otherwise -
Owning an engine that is "known" for holing the block would scare the sh#t out of me

I have seen plenty of them go with no warning at all, all good one day...scrap metal the next. I do think that the later ones dont have so many problem with this though. -
Yeah, looked it up. Looks like the 3406E 600 horse came out in 1997 and the Signature came out in 1998. I can't get em all right.
Now I wouldn't say Cummins is known for blowing holes in their engines. This isn't the day of the 905 and 555. You have to remember, I see a lot of "scrap" engines come in. -
At a previous job I drove a truck with a 525hp red top Cummins with a fresh overhaul. And then a 500 CAT with 800,000 miles on the engine. Same terain, and the same load the CAT walked all over the Cummins to the tune of a good 10 mph on the same grade. I almost forgot...................... worse fuel mileage from the Cummins along with the less power........... cummins is the best???????????????? NO THANKS!
The current Cummins offerings in the day cabs we are running now and the DPF EPA requirements the engines are junk. They have all been in for a lot warranty work, and no body at Cummins or KW can find the problem.
Give me a CAT any day and twice on Sunday. -
They came out a couple of months ago and said that they are using urea. International is going to be the only one not using urea.
-
Yeah they did say that, and International will be the odd engine out there not using SCR in the new trucks. Makes me wonder if International will bother with the Cummins after awhile, if they can get by without the catalyst and get power and economy. -
IH/Navistar and CAT are supposed to be working together.
-
It seems to be that way. I could not tell you about the cummins IH relationship because I do not know how it is going to work out. Right now cummins supplies IH with a majority of the engines that they need. When Cummins switched to scr IH was not happy so there is some bad blood between the two.
-
I heard that 2009 was the last year CAT is going to make thier truck engines...

I even double checked with a better source, (a CAT mechanic) and he said that was the plan...
Cat wants to focus on heavy equipment engines for dozers, excavators, ect....
