black smoke is excess fuel not fully combusted, ie. wasted horsepower! Alot of us like to see it as used horsepower cause it looks cool but it's not. I have a 4 wheeler with a modified cummins that has 573hp at flywheel. I went to a dyno with a number of trucks. the truck that was the best smoker, far better than the couple of puffs I put out ,he put out black sut during the whole test. turns out he was at 290 hp. Lots of fuel+ little air+ poor timing equals poor hp output and lots of smoke.

Any time you see a blue 379 with a double drop trailer - please get your ISX powered truck out of the way and into the right lane where you belong... thank you. It is unsafe and very frustrating to have to slam on the brakes going uphill behind you. This is a public service announcement by Cat Owners Concerned For The Safety of ISX Owners.

Just a little aside here..... when I had my old 425 Cat I used to use an old Cat (the meow, purring kind) food can for measuring out fuel additives. Loads of fun when guys ask "what the heck izzat you're putting in there?". Big smile and "Sssh. I'm on the test program for a secret new HP increaser additive by a branch company owned by Purina". "No s--t?, does it work?" " Oh yeah, adds 100 hp and about 1.5 mpg". " Wow, can I get on that program?" "Dunno, all very hush-hush. You'd have to ask them about it."

Wonder if Purina ever wondered about all these crazy truckers asking about their "secret fuel additives".:biggrin_2559:

I had two CAT 3208 engines in my boat. Those engines were fantastic! I am new to driving and drive a truck for Maverick with the Detroit Diesel engines in them. So far no issues.
I sure did love the sound of those engines!

First, get how to spell/pronounce "CUMMINS", then get the CAT.

Hey dude, gotta start somewheres. Mines a smoker and I hate When just tryiung to get a little ahead on the highway smoking everybody out(somewhat.. theres worse than mine out there) but I started with modding the fuel system first as uppsoed to getting more air in. More fuel before more air does equal better results... meaning that if I had boosted the hell out of it in the beginning without fooling with the fuel sys, I definatly wouldnt have the results I have now... power numbers that it. I'm in the process of working with the air now though ;) ... Besides... racins fer gassers! haha

Thats a side note though. When I worked for Rush, I figured all there was was Cat. lol Now that I'm at S&S, I really would like to put a Cat on my dyno just to see it for myself what it'll do..

I've worked on all of them and I like a Cummins, as long as it has pushrods. I figure if I had some screws loose and wanted to be an owner operator, I'd have to have a Cat ... In a Pete or W900.. But as I said, "IF".

I would any truck but I don't want with Cummins. CAT Technician said the Cummins have issues when they get to 300000 miles. One truck in our fleet has Cummins and goes to the shop twice a week all because the issues in the engine.
