And yes..... 40,000 pounds is legal weight! I don't know, sometimes things are hard to explain.... And sometimes, things are hard to understand unless you have experienced it! Spreads are different... They pull different, corner different, turn different, & back completely different!

To start off a spread axle can legal 20,000 per axle, so you can have 40,000 on the set (both axles of the spread. So when you hop a curb you could be putting the load weight on the axle going over the curb, and if thats on a hill or angle you could be putting the load weight on to one set of tires(or tire if its a SS). This at minimum is going to damage the casing of the tire, could possibly cause a blow out right there. And if you have super singles thats it your no going anywhere.

Jumping curbs is always bad on the casing, you can minimize the damage by putting 2x's in the gutter.

Most of the gators you see on the interstate is caused from drivers damaging tire casings, then retreader turning them out even though they have ply separation in the cord layers. Now all you need is a slightly under-inflated tire or a nice warm 117 degree Mojave days and poof.....

I was told you can have up to 20,000 on an axle on a spread, but combined they still need to be below 34,000.

I have had a long "war" with CDOT about Cali legal spread axle loads....

In fact...I'm now on a first name basis with half of the CDOT.....:biggrin_25523:

20k per axle. 40k combined. But still must remain with in 80k gross.

Western Canada goes by different rules.

How many flatbeds do you see at a CAT scale? Very few!
