Curious why guys run their lights during the day

Company policy. If the truck is moving, headlights must be on. I'm a rebel, I turn off my headlights while backing.

 

I will always take your admission that it's to "wake up the dumb ones" as a ###### good reason to run with all your lights on 24/7.

I never worry about the 5% of smart drivers around me. It's the other 95% I need to help make it safely home today.

 

I think a Volvo engineer somewhere thought it was a good idea to program the truck to have the lights on if the engine is running.

Idiocy.

If I am backing into a truck stop spot at night, my headlights are off and my working lights are on. The working light light up a dark spot really well. If they don't, I have a retina searing hand held spot light to get the job done.

 

It's all programmable and up to the purchaser. You can blame the carrier rather than Volvo.

 

Normally pulling class 3,5, or 8 hazardous, I run with them on for visibility.

 

I run with the running lights, but save the headlights for night time.

 

The firs company I can remember wanting the headlights on at all times was JB Hunt, and it had nothing to do with visibility, some how they decided the alternators lasted longer if you weren't turning them off and on. lol

It’s not as much needed to be more visible if you’re looking right at me, it’s more that I’ll show up better in your peripheral vision and be more noticeable by your subconscious, the part of your brain that taps you on the shoulder and tells you there’s a truck over there where you aren’t looking.

 

Akin to the helmet law here.
While not required, it's not a bad habit to have.
