I was curious if anyone ever drove for a custom harvester? And does anyone know what it pays?

This is something I want to look into. I know it invovles a lot of long days either in a truck or a harvester, a lot of hard work, but it's a seasonal job lasting 6 months a year.

Any more info would be appreciated.

That's what I do. My brother has a custom farming operation with 2 choppers, so I bought a truck and run with one of his crews. I like doing it, only problem is you are at the mercy of the weather. When the crops are ready, you have to be ready. You might work 20 hours one day and none the next, and it's usually very short notice as to when the moisture is right and it's ready to harvest. I see you are from Georgia, I am assuming you are talking about combine harvesting and driving hopper bottoms which is alot differnt from chopping and filling bunkers which is what I do, but either way your hours all depend on the weather and the seasons yield.

I was looking into it and found several companies hiring for next year already. I think I would enjoy this type of work. Is the pay worth it, or would I be better staying on a truck on the highway?

I found one out of Ohio that comes down to GA and FL and works their way back north and a lot of them in the mid-west.

It's probably late this year to think about it, they have been going awhile already. They start out in Texas and work their way north, some only cut wheat, and other cereals, some also do corn, milo, and beans.

It's mostly hopper work unless you run the harvester(combine), long days,
    weather dependent.

They used to put the guys up in motels, the last one I checked into had a big RV, it's been a few years since i looked.

I never did it, it's more a young guy's gig, many of them seem to be based in Nebraska, if that helps.

A friend of my sons ran one of the combines one year.

I'm stuck in Iraq this year, was thinking about next year or the year after.

I can't find anything about how much they pay.

I did the harvest in the plains back in '97 and '98. I worked for a guy out of South Dakota and we were put up in motels with breakfast provided. All other meals were our business and when we got into South Dakota he put us up in his own house. We were paid around $1200 a month (don't qoute me since this happened 11 years ago) which isn't much, but we got bonuses for taking great care of the equipment, working effiecently, and clean grain. The bonus was only paid out if you stayed the whole harvest season which for our group ran from around June 1 to November.
