With fuel costs going back up, do you guys have any suggestions for saving on fuel costs?
Do the cash back credit cards save you more than the cash price for diesel?
How about fuel additives? I see a lot of snake oil out there, but the fpc1 website has a lot of test reports from fleets, railroads, and mines. Are you guys using anything?
Are there good mobile phone apps for finding deals on diesel?
What tricks have you found?
Cutting fuel costs

My experience is to slow down, keep RPMs down (shifting), route on interstates as much as possilbe (less stop and go) and watching fuel prices on internet save me the most. Sometimes you can pick up a good tip from the CB, but mostly it's just from experience. You know who's cheap and who's not just from being thru there before.
As for the snake oil stuff? I wouldn't waste my money.
I don't know any large fleets using any of that stuff and if it were any good, they'd be swallowing it by the truckload. (no pun intended). -
Take a look at the pedal on the right,...
Yup, The one on the floor,...
Go easy on that one,........... -
These fpc1 guys have 64 reports from fleets on their webpage and a ton more from railroads and big mining operations and universities and labs. I've never used it, but it seems like a lot of folks are using their stuff.
I don't know. I've never seen an additive with this many real test results just out on their webpage like this.
I'll watch out for that pedal on the right.

Let's see if I can decode some of the MSDS. It is 83 - 87% Naptha, aka, white gas, coleman fuel. You can buy it for loads less than the $24 for 24oz.
n-Butanol is a solvent, used to make plastics and cosmetics.
Picric Acid, well, that is a weird one. It is a component of explosives and for a dye. Possibly that is where they get the colour of the liquid from with a little extra "oomph" during compression.
All in all, more snake oil. I went through some of the "testimonials". The majority were from the '80's and '90's, a few were from the '00's. Of the most recent ones, many stated either 'no results available' or showed results on 'unknown engines'.
One more company separating drivers from their paycheques. I could add coleman fuel to my tanks for LOADS less than that stuff. Also, 1oz to 250 gallons. That is SO diluted that it would make little to no change at all in the chemical makeup of diesel. It may help keep any bacteria from growing for sure, as for boosting performance. I am highly suspect in such a small dose. -
Meijer (the grocery store) has been a steady $.19-$.25 cheaper than the truck stops around here. Have not had a problem with the fuel in colder temps so far either. The problem is that deals like that are tough to find unless you run a dedicated route.

That stuff is mostly Naphtha, a little alcohol, and a tiny bit of picric acid, which is an explosive. The naphtha is just to dilute it so you have a manageable volume. Handling the picric acid is probably what makes that stuff so expensive, and man, is it ever expensive!
The best way I know to save on the pump price of fuel is to get in with someone that gets you a wholesale cost+pumping fee price for fuel. I get mine through Landstar, I haul enough for them to more than pay for all of my fuel. Depending on what the wholesale price is at the time, you can get $.15-.40 a gallon off of the cash price. NASTC (google it) also has a fuel card that gets this kind of discount, but you have to pay to join the association. -
I didn't look at any of the testimonials, just the lab testing. You can usually get anybody to say anything in a "testimonial" for $10. Like every infomercial ever.
The lab testing looked legit though. I mean Southwest Research isn't going to give these guys numbers without real testing. They do testing for the EPA at Southwest. And ESDC, they are a major lab in Canada. It doesn't click that a railroad or mine would use this stuff without serious testing, and it looks like these guys do from major labs.
I requested their rp503 report from Southwest and they emailed it right to me. It's old but looks real. Coke is old though, and I still like it.
Did you find anything fishy in the lab testing? -
Iplan my trip, where I fuel, shower, eat, & do whatever st one stop, so I don't have to stop several times. I ty to keep at 1600 rpm's if I am not pressed for time. I do use lucas fuel treatment, when servicing the truck. fill my fuel filt up with it & the remainder in the tanks. I have always seen a m.p.g. improvement using it. next time your fueling, pour 1/2 gal in each tank before fueling.I have tried several other additives over the years. saw no difference.been using lucas over 11 years & there has not been 1 time where I did not see a positive difference. I fuel at the loves & on their card sys. I rack up enough points on my card to get at least 2- gal a month if needed.I basically use when I service my truck though. but hey. I just use what works for me.
