Well, I think we all have done something stupid, you just recover and go on.

Me personally have done my share, like the time I took a "shortcut" to get to the shipper and turned a corner and low and behold, there was a 12' bridge. Had to back around a corner to get turned around on that one.
Or the time coming out of Schentacky NY, I went left instead of right, had turn around in a car lot on that one.
How about the time I stopped at the Walmart and locked the keys in the new truck, had not had a spare made yet, took me 1 and a half hours and 2 locksmiths to get it open. Of course I was then late on hours and had a PO'ed FM who was even more PO'ed when I told him sh@t happens. LOL

Then there was the time I backed into an Ice pile and ripped the trailer mud flap hanger completely off the truck, rather than go through RA I took it to the nearest TA and paid to get it fixed.

Sh@t happens, its how you recover and go on that counts.

I was running out of driving time when i made the bad decision of jumping off the highway the night before instead of getting a hos service violation and continued to a truckstop. but instead i went into this little town of dexter, ia. to get to the caseys general store that i thought had parking for trucks, no, so i made a left and went up the road and came to this railroad track. i saw a spot on the side of the road just before the railroad track, so i park there that night. I woke the next morning intending on turning around because i was not going further into the residential area, so i saw this opening across the street from where i was parked between the railroad and a small building on the corner, but it was a 2nd railroad track curving into the opening, so i decided to u-turn there, but when i saw a way out as i went further into the opening i continued across the curved track, and when i went across the truck dropped down onto the track and i continued across and got out of dexter, not knowing i had damaged the plastic body on the right side of the truck under the bottom step. I found out the next day after when i got fuel and went in the store and came back out and saw the damage. I talk to safety about it and she said i would not lose my job over it which is a relief, but i would need to stay another year without an accident in order to get a shot at a local truck driving gig. Did not want to stay on the road another year but i have no choice now. Wont be going on anymore back roads, unless the back road leads to the 01 or 90.

Sad to hear your story. We all learn through the school of hard knocks, and I am glad that you shared yours here. The more we share these stories, the better we can all deal with situations.

Hindsight is always a mother.... I think that taking a HOS violation would have been a better choice, but you couldn't see that coming until after the fact. One tool that I use to try to stay out of these situations is google maps with the satellite overlay. You might not have had time to do that.

Since you have been out a year, and you do want more hometime, you might consider transferring over to the lease side. You have to know yourself, and before you do choose, you must be ready to learn business and have the self discipline to control your money.

Yeah, hindsight is a b. about the gps thing, i knew it was a truckstop up the road, but only had like 9 minutes left on my 11 and it was a lot further than 9 minutes. And to make it so bad is that i went past 2 or 3 truckstops. Even though i had the accident, i will be staying a company driver even tho i do want to be at home with a local driving job, the event changed my plans to do that. Sorry no lease for me.

Thanks for the reply. That is not prime saying that, that is me saying that. Let me ask you a question. If you had a local trucking company and u have an insurance firm that u are insured with and they are giving you a cheap rate, but then i come along with a fresh accident asking you for a job, but the insurance company says, if you hire him we will raise your rate because he does not have a 3yr clean driving record. would you hire me knowing that u will have to pay more for me than your other drivers? most trucking companies in va. are led by the insurance companies, if they say no, the employer says no. unless they are willing to pay the cost, which most likely they are not.

Call around and talk to them. You never know, out here drivers are at a premium, and they are taking just about anyone who walks in.

Thanks for the reply. Like silenteagle said, hindsight is a b. Actually he said mother, but anyway, i wish i would have known i could get it fixed without notifying prime first, but the thing is the whole section of the steps on the passenger would need to be replaced and painted the same color. who would i get to do that? Even tho its too late now. And about locking the keys in the truck, guilty. Had to pay locksmith 60 bucks. Lesson learned. Got me a spare. Thats going to be a long recovery tho.

Consider that you can actually go over on your hours, and you won't get in trouble for it... as long as it doesn't happen except once in a blue moon. It's better to pick on those truck stops, rest areas, etc before you go down for the count. Be conservative. But before you go exploring the back country like you did... keep on going to the next safe place to park.

Where in the hell is that regulation for that? If you begin to say "safe haven" you better read that reg a bit more closely for exceptional circumstances. Poor planning is not an excuse.

Well, here is my abbreviated story at Prime. I was chugging away at banging out my TNT miles. I was about 15,000 miles when, I struck metal and concrete column and drug down the length of brand new trailer. That was roughly April 10th of last year. I started PSD Febo of the same year. Although, that incident itself wasnt major but, at the time my lack of quality sleep and the incident really broke my confidence in driving esp in the overnight with poor sleep in the day time... Anyway, two days later I decided it was time to leave the truck. I arrive home and 6 days later I was interveving for 2 local Class A jobs One being a small OTR outfit hauing Perdue chickens and was offered the Job but, It wouldve been a contract employee paid on a 1099 didnt want that hassle The other was Coca Cola Enterprises driving dry van bulk loads of Coke product at $25.00/hr with 40hrs of work a week and paid holidays off.. So, the point in all this that even a new guy will only a month OTR driving and a preventable in the month. I was still able to land a decent local driving job with those 2 strikes against me.... So don't just assume. Look locally and apply. You never know.
