But on a related note, any company can have it's own rules and policies for it's drivers. And especially at some carrier's on-site fueling terminals where faulty pump handles rarely shut off when it reaches full. Could be they were referring to fueling at their own terminals where they've had more than a few significant fuel spills while fueling and not attending to the nozzle. I've worked at a few of these places myself.

Truck stop fuel nozzles are not all 100% dependable either. Do this job long enough, sooner or later you'll come around the front of the truck to see one nozzle putting a gallon of fuel onto the ground every 3 seconds, for who knows how long.

If you are placarded you are supposed to be controlling the fuel flow, meaning you are supposed to be holding the nozzle while fueling. I see way more placarded trucks with both tanks fueling while the driver is busy elsewhere than I ever have drivers fueling by the book. I have seen a dot walk up to a guy that was fueling a placarded tank but I can't say what, if anything, came of it.

    I call flat BS.

I fill both tanks at the same time where possible. They click off when full then I splash a little more to the bottom lip of the fuel cap access.

If the staffer is spewing that crap in orientation, I would have second thoughts about the company. Just sitting here I shiver. UGH.

Back in 2011 when I went to Canada quite a bit I don't think I ever had a pump up there that had a clicker, fill one tank then walk over an hold the hose for that tank. Not sure what the deal was.

The genesis of this might be that some places that sell diesel and have slave pumps won't allow both sides to work at the same time. I ran into one up in Mass a while back.

...but DOT can't and won't enforce company policies.

I understand. I’m just posting this for future readers. In schooling, orientation, and apprentice phases you’re going to hear a lot of stuff. Some wrong, some right, some that apply from federal rules, some that may apply from state rules (CDL handbook), and some that are company policy rules. It’s important to pay attention and try and ascertain what’s what. Pay attention and develop a good BS Detector.

I think a lot of the issues we read about in these forums stems from not paying attention to detail. And context is often very important as well.
