What should the balance readings be?? They said comp on one was 73 and 78 on the other. They said excessive blowby too. Bad cups cause this? They want to pull head off

If u have excessive blow by then u have to have oil consumption bad cups do cause bad compression cuz the way they sit in the head of not seeing properly in the bottom compression is going in the cooling system or even in fuel system if u pull injectors out usually they are really good tell if cups ate done balance values should be between 30 and -30 when u run the test there is a line and it shows u up and down closer to 0 the better. The place u took it are they familiar with d12 do they work on them a lot or once in a while. What kind of oil consumption do u have between oil changes and what are the oil change intervals

It's a volvo dealer. I usually have to add about 1/2 to 1 gallon between oil changes. Oil change every 15000 mi.

That's nothing almost nothing if u have a bad ring burned or broken it would eat a lot more I have one right now that's using bout 5 to 6 gallons every oil change that I know as burned rings but the guys is trying to get the money to fix and it has been running for a year now I'm just always skeptical bout spending that kind of money if they do an in frame they will replace the head so the problem is going to be fixed y spend the money if u don't have to I have engined over here with 500 k eating that much oil so that's really almost nothing. My bed is if or when they do the in frame they're going to tell u to change injectors as well

Thanks for all the help. I'm going to call them and have them check cups on those two cylinders. If they look bad then I will have them all done.

Just called them. They are going to check cups and look in the cylinder with a bore scope. Also going to put air in cylinders to check for leaks. If it is cups I'll have them all done like you say
