Hireright, but yeah, I hope the same. They are doing their best to give companies so much leverage over us drivers.

I read your post last night, thats why I re-read my pre hire letter more carefully and sure as day I saw that I'd have to go to orientation before I even knew if I was hired. So that leaves me in an awkward situation, as your thread brought up. Either quit and don't know if you'll get hired, or get hired and not give 2 weeks notice. Thats an ugly situation.

I emailed the recruiter last night and told her I am in a bad place financially, supporting two people on my paychecks and cant quit my current job to go off to orientation without knowing if I'll be hired. Its the truth and I need to do what works for my situation.

my current company is a large pharmacy, they too have a high turnover rate. If I quit or "leave for an emergency" they will let me go and hire a college grad to work for less. I've been there 5 years and make enough money to live off but not enough to save. I've left them once before for another job opportunity, but it didn't work out so I came back. they wont hire me back again, thats my concern should something happen at orientation. I dont want to leave without two weeks notice as they are my reference for the last 5 years.
So, I'm backing away from the large carrier and will try to find a local place where I can go in and speak to someone in person. My cdl school says they will place drivers, so maybe ill see fi they can assist. Once I get my cdl ill try to use the job search option on this site also. I dont like my current job but its not worth abandoning.

First off, are you talking drug testing or driving testing? If your concerned about passing a drug test then stay away from trucking. If your talking about a skills test, almost all companies expect yout o quit your job then come to their orientation. If you dont think you can pass, then get some more training.

I think you have missed the whole point, nothing bout drugs mentioned op also posted that she supports 2 other people on her pay needs a little more security than oh yea you will make stacks of cash, be your own boss, drive a new rig. then get there after you have no job and say sorry recruiter lied to you the pay is half we have our thumb over you, here is your junker hope you make it. What about the actual psychical that companies give even though you have a brand new health card in your pocket. Once you are unemployed they have you especially if others depend on you. IMO if a company demand you quit your current place before you know if hired its not gonna end well. As far as her skills test please those companies will put any body that is a CDL holder to work we see proof every day.

I'm wondering why they cant do whatever testing they need to before orientation, like when you get your physical.Get it all done in one shot then have orientation at a separate time so if you dont qualify for one reason or another you know and dont have to worry about quitting your current job, going way out to their orientation spot for testing, and getting home somehow if you dont make it. Just seems like you're putting yourself in a potentially awkward situation otherwise.

Drug testing doesn't concern me, I dont have the time or tolerance for that BS. I just wish they'd do what they need to before you go out there because I appreciate job security and it would give me peace of mind. I am the type of person who will question ,double and triple question everything, I worry about everything and like to know my ##### is covered before making a life changing decision. Also to clarify, for the sake of correction and not to be rude, I am supporting 2 people , but i mean myself and someone else not two others aside from myself but thank you Wore Out that was my main concern.

the company I am debating about is roehl. I feel stupid because everyone says how good the company is, i just hadnt realized until reading the letter again that pre-hired is like, not actually hired, so it alarmed me at first and now I am debating should I take the physical for the position and schedule an orientation date or should I look for a local job where the orientation will at least be closer to home?(roehls orientation is a few hours away from me)

I wanted to make sure if i found a local trucking place in around sleepy hollow or chicago, that it wouldnt count against me on my DAC for some reason that i didnt go with roehl after being pre-hired. I may just be overthinking the whole thing, because I have a tendency to do that. sorry for babbling on. This will be a big change for me and im excited about it but also cautious and nervous.
