I do understand that it may confuse people that you and I have the word "Mississippi" in our location, and disagree on this subject. So please let me clarify...for all who may read.
The "Gulf Coast" is an entirely differant country. Populated with funny accents and blue hair.
In north MS where I reside, my kids (now grown) will tell you with no uncertianty, "When daddy said stay here, he meant it." And enforced it like a complete nazi, with a newly stripped limb from a small shrub commonly refered to as a switch. And he carried a gun....just to make sure that nosey adults got the message clearly.
The "village" never bothered my children....ever. My children grew up in a house (as did I) that contained at least 2 loaded guns within easy reach.
My kids understood how "evil" the village was/is. They attended a school that was 50% plus foster kids. They understood the outcome of dialing 911 because they got their ### spanked. They understood that the village was more concerned about the "check", than it was the child.
Although it is very rare. At age 9, some boys (in my part of Utopia) are in the woods hunting....alone. WITH a loaded gun. We have ZERO record of an accidental shooting, involving a "child" while hunting. Unless it was the adult who pulled the trigger.
To quote from Hank Jr. "We say grace and we say ma'am. If you ain't into that, we don't give a ####."

Aaah, north Mississippi - God's country fer shur! I lived in Oxford from 1981 to 1993 and you are absolutely correct - it's way different than the coast. My son, now 35, did all 12 years of school in Oxford. He takes every opportunity he can to go back up there to visit. As a matter of fact, he told me one time to make sure he gets buried in Oxford if he should happen to pass before I do.
Yep, danc, we do disagree on this one particular topic. I bet we agree on a whole lot more though. Now, get out there and shoot something!dancnoone Thanks this. -
I want to go hunting. But I'm going in and out the door on short trips

As for Oxford, even it's changing. We've had a ruckus over the deer population this year. Too many. The locals want them culled, PETA says no. The City caved....then winked LOL
The Oxford locals have been deer hunting (archery) since mid August

Wonder how many of those PETA folks have accidentally run over a fawn and/or doe in search of food.
