It's the same as a hotshot.. You'd have to select "off duty" for your reset but can not select "sleeper" meaning no splits or anything like that, you'd have to do 10hr resets.
Also just for the record, there is no DOT regulation that tells you where you have to sleep. People that think the DOT can force you to prove you slept in a hotel is just nonsense. They do not have the authority to tell you where you sleep. Only that "if" you have a sleeper berth and select "sleeper" on your logs that sleeper berth has to be of DOT specifications.
There is no rule that says you can no sleep on the ground outside your truck, in the trailer, in a hotel or in a tent, or at your local girlfriend's house.. The rule about sleepers was to force companies to provide an adequate sized sleeper for a driver to get good rest rather than letting some company force you to sleep in some tiny box to save money.
You don't have to prove anything to any DOT guy as to where you sleep if selecting "off duty" all they can do is get you if you select "sleeper" and don't have an actual sleeper.

There are a lot of OTR car haulers who run day cab haulers and stay at hotels every night.

I find the newer sleeper birth provision with ability to actually extend 14 hours to have drastically increased the work volume potential. This is only possible with ability to spend one of the breaks in the sleeper for at least 7 hours - awkward if those short 7 hours were to be fulfilled at motels (they happen quite often during daytime) or a driver's seat. Living off the dry van spot market is a rat chase where this operational time increase is a game changer. I can stay 100% legal and be just as ready to grab almost any load that otherwise would only be available for those on paper logs or fake Elogs. Paper logs vs ELDs are a non issue any more as far as I am concerned.
But quite honestly, I would not want to argue with a DOT cop that sleeping is the same biological process whether is done on the front seats or floor or motel as in the actual sleeper berth. But I can see that such irrational arguments might take place. LOL
I just am glad I have sleeper.Last edited: Dec 8, 2020

Yeah, being I'm running hotshot now I don't even know how the new split shifts work as I don't have a sleeper to take advantage. With that saying what I run even if I had the option it likely wouldn't help me much.
The biggest advantage to me on running paper when my elogs broke once is I was able to drive late and then still start out at a "normal" time vs waiting till the ticker on my elog checked green at 11am because I ran late till 1am. That's what hurts me the most.
When I leave FL I usually don't get out of the car auctions until 12 or 1pm. It never fails that there is always some hold up at the auction. So I drive late my 1st day on the road maybe till 11pm to 1am but I still wake up by 8am and then I have to sit around until 9am to 11am depending on how late I ran. I'm not tired but I'm stuck sitting there holding up my day because of a stupid clock. On paper, I could easily fudge that and keep myself on a normal schedule after that.. but that 1st day screws me every time..shorty102292 Thanks this.
