    Since the sun shines the same number of hours (and minutes and seconds) during that day, how has it given farmers more sun?
    If you work dawn to dusk, what does it matter what time the clock shows?

    Wasn't that what the rooster was for? To wake you up at dawn?
    Natures alarm clock for the farmer...

    My RM GPS calculates all that time zone and time shift stuff.
    My 'phone' changes the time with the time change.
    Easy.

    Easy until we no longer have smartphones and GPS systems, at least.

    So DST becomes obviated by one's rising an hour earlier. That doesn't sound like "They had to".
