The only test thats a little complicated is the Hazmat. I got my cdl,s on my own back in 97.The cdl knowledge test, air brake, doubles, tripples, and tank is very simple.Read the book and if you have common sense it all is simple. Not really any harder than getting a regular drivers license.

The skills test on the other hand requires help. You need to to know somebody with a truck for you to use. Like stated before it doesnt have to be a semi. Could be a dump truck with a lowboy.I say that because you might go to a small excavating company and offer to help them out after you get your permit. Offer to drive for them for free with there driver cause you have to have a licensed cdl holder with you to drive with your permit. You can practice backing in there parking lot in the evenings or weekends until you get ready to take the skills test.

Now for over the road this might not get you a job right now because they either want to train you and pay you squat for as long as possible. It is hard to find a job right now if you have a cdl with no current OTR.

And what you're failing to tell him is, without that certificate from a school. He will never hold/get a job at any of the major OTR companies until he gets some serious experience under his belt.

With that certificate, he can move about freely. And that's needed in this economy.

Many things have changed over the past 3 years with regard to requirements for incoming commercial drivers. Another major change is headed our way next year.

So NOW is the time to get that CDL. Or you'll pay an even bigger price later.

I did and I've said how. That certificate sounds like the forklift certification that every job I've ever had running a forklift required me to have. I've never seen one and have never found anyone that has one.

That's because they mount them on the wall at home, if they're brave enough. they don't carry them around in their back pocket.

It's called a diploma from an accredited CDL mill. Or, at the very least a transcript.

The days of getting a CDL on your own, are almost over. And the fine tuning of the rules next year, will eliminate it once and for all.

Many of the driver mills are whining now, that it will force them to raise fees, or close the doors. Good riddance i say.
