The primer on the three filter setups is useless. The two filters are 'reasonable'. Obviously we have an ESOC for priming in the shop. I made a primer setup with a inline fuel pump with a hose on one end to go into the tank and a compucheck on the other end for priming when I'm working out of my service truck. Works better than nothing. It needs to have a decent pressure rating though.

    Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KZH52Z...UTF8&colid=3I7U882A6GLBG&coliid=I1BB09WRNPVAK

Here is what I found doing some hunting on the net.. not my words but falls in line with what others are talking about.

The only other way to prime that engine is with pressurized fuel. You have to pump the pump over 150 times. At the dealership, we use 2 types of tools to prime the engine after a filter change.

We used a modified bug sprayer that you get at your local hardware store, with a compuchek fitting and a hose long enough to reach the truck. You fill the bug sprayer about 1/2-3/4 up with fuel, pump it up a bunch, then if you added a valve to the hose, open the valve and that forces the fuel in the fuel system. Let it build pressure, than crank the engine. DO NOT USE ETHER!!!

Detroit has a special tool for the DD series engines that is called a ESOC, it does the exact same thing, but it does work better. We used the bug spray for a long time to get the DD engines started till our ESOC got repaired.

Do not keep cranking and cranking the engine, if it cranks more than 5 seconds, stop, then pump up the bug sprayer some more, then repeat. Once it is started, let it idle for a couple of minutes, then take it for a road test around the block. This is to make sure all of the air is out of the system. If it does not start after the filter change, then you could have cut an o-ring on one of the caps, or the filter is not seated all the way. Also, be sure to use Detroit fuel filters, and not aftermarket. We have had lots of trucks come to the shop with aftermarket filters that are having hard to start issues.

I know this tread is old but I want to share with my experience. If DD13/15 has Davco installed before main filters you are lucky. Open the Davco's top cover and fill it up with clean fuel. Do not close the top cover. leave it open. Hand pump primer and monitor the fuel level in Davco. If it goes down then it's ok. Add some more fuel add keep hand pumping. 200-300 pumping would be enough to start the engine. You will feel when pumping became hard. Do 10-15 more pumpings and start the engine. Done it more than 25 times and it works. If you see Davco's level does not go down while you pump then hand primer is bad. If you are an owner of a truck buy a spare primer and keep it in the truck. it costs $15-20 on ebay.

The primer isn't big money... it's a steel bottle with a quick connect at the end of the hose. You pump it up like an insecticide sprayer and let it rip.

I bought one of theseFuel System Primer Pump then I got a schraeder valve for a tire and drilled a hole in the tank just under the top and install valve. All it takes is about 30 psi hook up the compucheck turn on the valve wait 1 min and crank. Works like a charm on a 2011 dd13. Be sure and close the valve on the hose after the engine starts or you will pump fuel back into the primer can.

My DD15 won’t start. I check high pressure hose and no girl in that line. Hand pump newer got really hard. Even after like 40 times pump it it’s getting soft again. So had to remove the returning line and push air in to the system. I able to turn the truck on. When I shut it off I can’t tirn it back again w a keys. I have to add air again. Anybody had same issues? It is high pressure pump maybe a quantity valve or something else ?

You have to push that priming pump way, way more than forty times.
More like 200 to 300 times.
