I ran a 2009 dd15 for 800,000 km set at 530/1850 jakes held really good with 100,000 lbs now I'm running the mx13 jakes are maybe 30% weaker but still enough power wise dd15 will run 70 km/hr up certain hard pulls this 485/1650 will do about 50 km/hr on same pulls... Fuel wise the 13 litre is doing about .75 a gallon better heavy and a full mpg light ... A mx13 is very comparable to a dd13 rental I drove .. If I had 3.55's instead of 3.42 rears I think the fuel milage would be closer if you go with dd13 go 3.70 rears dd15 will do great with 3.55 PS I think dd15 will last longer heavy haul it's not working max power as long to get back up to speed
DD13 vs DD15 might even think Dd16

i just got my 2015 coronado 132 with 58inch bunk mid roof DD16 560hp 1850 tq 3.55 rears 18 speed low pro 24.5 ... at 65mph im at 1390 rpm's i pull tri axle dump permited at 107K but pull normally on average 118K locally 32 miles loaded 32 miles back empty 6-7 loads a day running fairly agressive and im averaging 4.8 mpg i curently have 30K miles on truck so not broken in yet. if you are fimiliar with the NYS thruway at all between albany and syracuse and know of the bigger hill by little falls i call it the indian castle hill i pulled that 112K and only dropped to 44 mph and i think that hill is 3 or 4% .....OTR with my reefer trailer hualing 80K or less no fairings or any fuel savings items on truck and i was about 5.8 to 6.3mpg .... i friken love this truck its a #### animal has all the power i need it just ##### and gets let me say ...... if you are an O/O and do alot of 80K in the north east i say go with the dd16 set like mine the 3.55 rears will not scare you .... if you ever get over my way i;ll take ya for a ride just to show you ... ....idk what more to say about it i just love it ..... if not going with the dd16 then deff go with the dd15 nothing less and get the multi tq .... thing is i do believe if you take a look at the specs the multi tq is 1550/1750 and you get to choose to have that 1750 on cruise or the last 2 gear positions or you go straight 1650 ....before the GHG14 motors you use to be able to get the 1850 tq on the dd15 but not anymore thats why i went with the dd16 just for the 1850 ... ok think i coverd everything lol

Now we need to see how long the engine can go without a breakdown.

I have 82k on my truck now and still going great no issues at all... only have had to do a parked regen like 3 or 4 times and that was over the winter from excessive idling .... mileage is up to about 5 running heavy and about 6+ for OTR .... Absolutely love this truck

My 2013 DD15 @ 560 hp / 1850 is just about at 250,000 miles pulling 140,000 lbs on the Canadian prairies doing similar kind of work hauling grain 85 % within a three hour radius with the odd trip 7 hours away.
My lifetime is 4.35 mpg (5 summer, 3.8 winter) US mpg.
When you first get one, they are really disappointing, my old Mercedes pulled better. But as you get more miles on it the computer gives you more power and the fuel economy improves. It works great now.
I have not had any problems at all, just a leaking oil pan once but they fixed it under warranty. There are four of us with these engines, one of which is the bigger DD16.
One fellow has the same truck as mine but two months older. He just replaced his DPF filter at 7,800 hours when the engine lights came on. He was able to finished his run six hours out, re-load, return, dump and drive to the Western Star dealer where they had it back out by the end of the next day, $1,800 including parts and labour. Been running great since.
Mines just under 8,000 hours, so I know I'll be doing mine soon, but I know he idles more in the winter. He leaves his running if it's below -20C (-04F), I run mine if it's under -30C (-22F) when we are away from home at night.
The other guy also had his DEF pump fail a few months ago. Ours are air powered, the newer ones are electric. Apparently it was caused by having the wrong filter in the air dryer, it must be an oil coalescing filter not the standard one, I have replaced mine with the right ones, he wasn't aware of the difference.
The other two guys have newer ones. -
How fast does the engine de-rate when the DPF filter is reaching the changing point? Our shop initially told me that the filter needed changing at 300k (they didn't tell me about hours). When I dropped the truck off for the DPF change, shop told me they were going to wait for the next wet service and include DPF at that time (another 13k miles). I have the DD13.

He said at first it kind of ran bad, black smoke, didn't pull too good, then after a bunch of minutes, maybe an hour, the check engine light came on with a derate of 20% and the smoke went away as it wasn't trying to give max power. He called the dealer, they asked about the mileage, he had 380,000 km (236,000 miles), they said probably DPF and booked him in for the next morning.
We do some short runs, some long runs, some 30 mph gravel roads and quite a bit of sitting in line, sometimes as much as three hours. So if you are strictly long haul you'd probably get a longer service live.otherhalftw Thanks this. -
I drove a 15 Cascadia with the DD16. The truck was meant for heavy haul but I was pulling dry van. A pig on fuel. Detroit has this pollution crap called a One Box. It is under the passenger step and contains the DPF, doser and a bunch of electronics and sensors. The other engines use a smaller unit that is around $5000. Mine went @ less than 50,000 miles. Was under warranty but that Box is huge and costs over $10,000. There was only one in N.A but the smaller engine box is common. Go with the DD15!

Correction. My friend said he drove his DD15 for four days with the check engine light on before he got back to change the DPF filter.
