We ran out of Butler, IN going south mostly, but once and a while we went east. Those were the good times. You could double out the coils and then wait till it got dark. We would run the loads down and deliver them then go to a local bar/resturant and have a couple of beers. Go to bed and then do it all over the next day. I miss thosse days. To bad the money isn't there anymore. heck I normally made about $1000-1200 for a 200 mile run...but not anymore.

Thats the way it should be, I hope it goes back sometime soon. I don't like the thought of being under a van starting next week

I didn't like the thought of pulling a van either, but at least I'm rolling and making a profit (not much, but at least its a profit). Many of my iron hauling buddies are to stuck in their ways to try anything else and they are suffering for it.

If the old days could come back I would do it in a heartbeat. I just don't see it happening with the permit costs going up, fuel, parts, lack of steel moving, and lawsuits all effecting trucking

Yep, it's like driving a volvo, it will get the job done, but I sure hope none of my friends see me doing it:biggrin_2551:

Evil capitalist has it right, figure up the total per mile including dead head, sometimes it really pays. The harder part is figuring what your break even point is and then it's so much easier to decide on a load. For example, yesterday morning I deadheaded over 200 miles to pick up a load that is only going 270 miles with the load on the truck all weekend, which we usually don't work weekends anyway, but even with all the deadheading it pays over $3 a mile.

    Good luck with your company!
