Did propane for a year in cali ( both semi and bobtail ) so heres my to cents - bobtail with amerigas is gonna pay well during cold weather months ( every one of those accounts will want / need some) so you'll be dragging that hose everywhere to get to the tanks and dealing with customers of every type ( commercial and residential ) .
When i did it , they had 4 routes in the area that we did , and about five drivers . So you rotate routes alot. Amerigas used to have a no sick leave / no vacation policy from sept to march where we were due to fall , winter, early spring being busy season . ( other words you'll not be taking vacation at thanksgiving , christmas , new years) and you'll be working your ### off ( loading , unloading , and best of all , driving in really sucky weather ) , also you 'll be on -call for run outs almost constantly .
Flip side - it 's overtime , you do get a little time home everyday , and it's fairly easy to learn and transfer ( amerigas is in just about every state) .
The semi route is just about as busy during winter , but mostly does the refills of the storage tanks that you'll see ( either double tens or 1 twenty ) thats where the bobtails reload at . Your OTR basically 3-4 months . Mostly by the load , sometimes hourly depending where it comes from and going .
Smaller companies ( 3-10 trucks ) you'll be doing a lot of maint on vehicles and tanks and such. Big company like Amerigas has lots of equipment but enforce there rule strickly.
Now thats all said , during warm weather , thats the kick back time , work slows down so you you get a actual weekend , and take vacation and take care of stuff . So 6 months busy busy , then a slower period for 6. Good luckrollin coal, Rugerfan and Whiteout out West Thank this. -
Yeah I've heard it slows down during the warmer weather just depends on what you're doing could be painting tanks or swapping them put etc, how do you feel about the pay being so close where as the driving distance is about 15 or so more roughly, it's no doubt amerigas may give Mr more hours/$$ but truthfully I do not want to work a crazy amount of OT I want to work maybe at most 50-60 hrs a week while learning to code on me off time because I'd rather pursue that honestly, can't imagine doing 12s everyday and doing that
Lav-25 Thanks this. -
The local one doesn't have many reviews actually maybe 1 or 2 and they don't seem like anything really vs amerigas being a top supplier you're gonna get mostly a mixed bagLav-25 Thanks this.

Exactly! Literally feel like a token and you unfortunately have to work with people who lie on you as well or at least I did and the manager didn't really help the situation so it just got on my nerves and the pay which was 1366 bi weekly...I can get more I hope with my CDL B than thatIamoverit Thanks this.

I definitely believe you can make more wages outside of a government job. I think the government jobs are appealing to those who think job security, retirement and/or benefits are more important than weekly pay.
I have a few friends that work for Baltimore County and the amount of PTO, pension, and health benefits are impressive. They always have hours too.
I'm with you though, I'd rather work for today instead of the future. You never know when your last day is going to be.DanOMac Thanks this. -
My thinking is and yes I did like the fact you could bank 480 hours your first year at maximum, it doesn't make sense for Me to bank all this time off and vacation while making starvation wages essentially..like I'm not taking a day off when my pay is underwhelming because it doesn't make sense to me to take a vacation if I can't enjoy it with having enough finances to have fun with. Being broke but having time off is a bit of an oxymoron at least to me. The pension, stability, sure are good things but if I'm poor kinda changes things but oh I have good medical ♂️Iamoverit Thanks this.
