I have narrowed my choices for company CDL training to CFI and SWIFT. They both have pro's and con's so I am trying to decipher which one has the least cons.
Swift
Pro's:
- I can go to Columbus, OH for the program (100 miles away).
- Higher CPM to start and earning in 1 year
- Tuition paid after 13 months (deducted each week)
- No "forced" dispatch
- Terminal (Columbus) in Ohio
Con's are:
- Length of program,(21 days) especially road training in 3rd (last week) is only 4 days?
- With mentor, student drives as a "solo" driver for only first 50 hours, then "team" for remaining time
- SWIFT's reputation for producing poor drivers.
CFI
Pros:
- Length of program is 4 weeks, although actually about 21 days before CDL testing is done. Last few days are more skills practice.
- School seems to test different aspects of CDL license throughout program rather than all in same day?
- Overall cost much cheaper (about <$1000 than SWIFT)
- Tuition pro-rated throughout the first 12 months. No payroll deductuctions.
- Student drives as a "solo" during 7500 mile OTR training. No team
Cons
I know I could go to a private school, but I don't have the immediate funds to pay for it. Being a company "slave" for a year is the price I and others pay.
- Have to go to Missouri for training.
- Lower starting .cpm, but quarterly/mileage increases will get .to 40 cpm after first year vs .43 cpm for Swift.
- Forced Dispatch
- No terminal in Ohio
If there are any drivers who are currently with either company, I would appreciate your thoughts and opinions of them. Feel free to message me.

Oh, shoot. I realized I had posted a similar thread last week. Must be suffering brain freeze here in NE Ohio. Sorry guys, and ladies.
IluvCATS Thanks this. -
If a driver was a poor driver, they were probably a poor driver before they ever got behind the steering wheel of a truck.
Poor drivers are a result from making bad decisions and not using common sense.
No company holds a gun to a driver's head and tells them to drive under a low bridge, make a u-turn on a busy highway and wind up in a ditch, or not to set their parking brakes so the truck rolls down a hill into a bunch of parked trucks, etc.
It's the driver's choice and decisions that caused those scenarios.
You're the captain of the ship when you're driving, if you screw up, it's nobody's fault but your own.Last edited: Mar 21, 2018

Don’t call me a poor driver just because of a few parked cars and a stupid bridge!
