The one deer I hit about 10 yrs ago was determined to be non-preventable by my boss, and only required the replacement of one part of a 3 piece bumper and a bracket. The herd of antelope I swerved to avoid and did $3,000 in damage to the truck when I hit a highway sign was ruled preventable and I split the cost of the repairs to the truck with the company. Usually I bounce them off the container.

There is a company in my area that will give you one day off without pay for the first deer hit. The third hit is termination. Sometimes it is preventable, if you are driving slow enough and see the deer in time to stop or slow down even more. Alot of times it is at that time of night were they are like bugs and you can't see them till they are right infront of you on the road. I just slow down to try and keep damage limited.

I'd take advantage of that unpaid day off to seek employment elsewhere.

I tried to ignore the topic but I agree. From the minute I heard that a deer hit was non preventable I would be looking for another job.
I can think of 4 that I have seen trucks hit and not one was in any way preventable. I tried to drive on the shoulder about 4 times one night to hit some eating and they just stepped back. The best one though was getting on the Mass Pike eastbound at Sturbridge. There was a van trailer ahead of me and he does the drag takeoff out of the toll booth with me behind him. A small red car passed me on the right and got in front and the van slammed on the brakes and smoked tires right in front of the maintainance building. The red car gasses on it and passes the van on the left and about the time it clears the tractor a deer slammed through the passenger glass and smashes the passenger in the head.
Calling a deer strike preventable is about as stupid as anything I have seen on these boards.kajidono, scottied67 and johnday Thank this. -
We deal with them (Deer nad Elk) year round on the eastern end of our run. From Athena over Westen Mtn. and Tolgate into Elgin. The chip trucks and the logging trucks take there toll on the Deer population.

Hit a deer and get fired???????????? Who the heck made that rule, some city girl who's never driven in deer country at night?

I heard that IWX uses recruiters and they take out $40.00 a week out of the drivers paycheck for a year for recruiter fees. Does anyone know if this is true?
