I have a 2015 International Prostar with a Cummins ISX15. I accidentally broke the connector for the DEF Pressure Line when removing it from the DEF dosing valve. To purchase the entire hose with the connector at the dealer cost around $300 for part number 3990139c1. On eBay I found a similar hose for only $79 that looks identical but with a different part number 4087789C1. Both hoses are made by Navistar. The only difference is the dealer is listed as a DEF Pressure Line, and the one on eBay is listed as a DEF Return Hose. Are these hoses interchangeable?

NO. Same as with power steering, the pressure line is designed for much higher pressure, a return line for much lower pressure. Look at the type of fittings on a steering pressure line vs on the return line. I saw the 399xxxx for $277 online. The 408xxxx is also online as an International OE part, about $150 and listed as a RETURN line. The return line is not made to withstand the pressure of over 100psi as there is in the pressure line.

Get the correct hose from the dealer. If you just broke the plastic lock clip you may be able to rob the clip from a similar hose as some of the hose ends are the same size.
JB7 Thanks this. -
Thanks, you seem to know a lot about these hoses. I made the stupid mistake of breaking the plastic retaining clip that holds the pressure hose to the dozing valve. I can't seem to find that clip anywhere. The best I could find was that return hose on eBay with a similar clip. Do you think I could use the clip from that return hose on my pressure hose? Also, would you know where I can buy those clips?

Plastic dries out, gets old and brittle, and then breaks easily.
"I can't seem to find that clip anywhere."
I did a lot of digging on the net and can't find anything either. I did find a similar clip (looks the same) and a clip and fitting for a DPF feed line on a Freightliner So you should be able to get the one you are looking for. As Goodysnap stated go the dealer. Either International or Cummins. -
For the line at the DEF doser, you need the 3/8” clip.
Heavyd Thanks this. -
I measured the inside diameter for the DEF pressure line that connects from the pump to the dosing valve and it is 1/4". I then compared it to the other two DEF lines that connect from the tank to the pump. Those two lines are a little bigger at about 3/8" or 5/16" inside diameter not exactly sure since I measure it with a ruler, but they are definitely bigger than the pressure line which I am certain is 1/4". Those are the only three lines that carry DEF liquid and connect to the pump(Tank inlet port + Tank return port + Supply port to Dosing Valve) . Each has its own heating cables wrapped around them. That's all the three lines the DEF system comprises with the exception of one more line that looks like a hose but it's actually a conduit of some type where the other end has an electrical cable harness connected.Last edited: Aug 17, 2023
