It is far more complex than simple piss. Much like the ammonia used for frozen warehouse refrigeration systems; it is in many cases synthesized. Fundamentally urea is of course a main ingredient in urine - uric acid
(DEF is a 32.5% solution of chemically pure urea and 67.5% deionized water) The 32.5/67.5 is critical, as at that solution, the urea and water freeze and thaw at the same rate, so it will maintain that ratio/consistency, never diluting.

I can assure you it is not Al Gore nonsense...Tell you what, you come and stick your head over my exhaust pipe for 30 minutes. Then, if you're still alive, stick your head over the exhaust of a DEF truck...
Seriously, it works, but when will they force reefer units to run it? Many of those run 24/7 and I've even seen new reefers blow some pretty black exhaust...

Well, just got "on board" with DEF.
After two weeks of normal operation it seems that there is no DEF flow - drove about 2000 miles and have used less than 2 gallons of DEF.
No warning lites, no change in engine "behavior".
Sure it's nice not to have this expense (LOL!), but I'm concerned about possible damage to the related components.
    Can anyone help?
    Many thanks in advance.

DEF rate isn't a constant...the engine adds DEF as needed

I have been using roughly 20 gal every 5000-5500 miles. That seems to be constant since the end of May.

what I'm saying is...it doesn't flow at a consistent rate...

Agreed, from what I've learned so far about this system - DEF consumption should be at about (2-3)% of fuel consumption, so less than a gallon per 1000 miles does not look right.
Still wondering - if I keep going "as is" - what, if anything, might happen to the related components?

have you advised the dealer? Be preemptive.
If damage should occur, they need to know it's a faulty DEF system, not your lack of providing DEF to the system. They will find any way the can to weasel out of paying a warranty claim/repair, of they can, should it eventually come down to it.

I honestly have no clue when it comes to DEF. All I know is to fill it up before the light on my dash turns red. Calling the dealer would most likely be your best choice.

Or at least let the shop now about it and your DM to cover your bumm should they choose to not look at it.

The computerized system will force the engine to idle down and not allow the truck to run faster than 5 miles an hour if you run out of of DEF.
