Maybe they didn't defame your character. They said you were a great guy. But your driving is way dangerous. They would never hire you back ever. But you were still a pretty nice guy.

Are you working now? If not, just hire on with a 2nd chance company that won't care about what your previous employer has to say. It's easier to do this than fight it in court.

If it's true it's not defamation. Also a previous employer can say anything they want, as long as it true or an obvios opinion. Most don't as policy to fend off law suits, but no laws prevent it.
