Bear in mind, this forum is packed full of older individuals who 1) refuse to believe in climate change (despite mounting evidence), 2) despise any type of change in how "we've always done things" (refer to the absolute resistance to E-logs, DPF, aerodynamic trucks, or the possibility of electric or hybrid trucks) and 3) refuse to admit that anybody can actually succeed in this business running modern equipment.

Yes, the newer trucks require a more intensive maintenance program. On the other hand, newer trucks also burn less fuel (properly set up and driven), and IF maintained PROPERLY actually have less downtime overall than older equipment.

I DO NOT think the DPF/SCR is doing anything to prevent excessive pollution on today's engines. However, it is currently required. So factor it into the cost per mile of operation. My personal opinion is that we would see better pollution control without the DPF system. Today's engines are built to much tighter tolerances than the classic old iron, and use fuel far more efficiently. Take that DPF system off and watch the truck specific pollution drop while mileage jumps up!
