There is no trade off. You are being paid to do a job, and that included interacting with customers.
Thats how I see it anyways. Maybe I'm wrong, but being polite has never come back to bite me in the butt.

Kill 'em with kindness has worked well for me since I first started. But some are just beyond that point and treat us all, the best or worst the same.

Kill them with kindness, every time, without fail. You'll leave them thinking that maybe, just maybe they are the rat for wearing their ugliness on their sleeve, and you (at least I) leave feeling better about myself. When I first started this job I was amazed at how some receivers treat truck drivers. Now I take it as a challenge to display the most courteous and professional demeanor I possible can, placing me and all drivers I hope, above their lowly opinions of us. And then I leave feeling better about me.

Agreed Sky. Alot of the time, that kindness is disarming because they're prepared with dukes up, for the "I gotta get on the ROOOAD, HURRY UP n' DO YER JERB" type interaction and in doing so, will often earn you faster service / favors.

But my gripe is with the ones that see us as a faceless inconvenience to ram-rod through the pipe, regardless of how we present ourselves...

Don't let 'em wee wee on your parade. Eventually we get to leave and get back out to the freedom of our highway, they have to stay in their sad and lonely world of hate and ugly. Keep your eye on the prize, you're only there for a brief period, then back to the reasons we all love this job!

I should add, sometimes I just want to say, "it must be just awful being you!"
But of course I just smile instead, and keep the thought inside my head.
