BTW, if I might -----
I'd like to thank each and everyone who expressed their opinion, thoughts and ideas in this thread. IMO, that's the best way to learn -- examine ALL sides, and allow others to form their OWN opinion(s) as a result.
The way this subject has been discussed impresses the hail outta me. No name-calling, no insults, no food fight, just calm, rational, discussions. Let those reading what we all had to say form their own thoughts, which is, again IMO, the way it oughta be.
If folks come away with the impression that no two truckers ever agree on ANYthing, they won't be too far off, will they?
Once again --- the caliber of posters here at The Truckers' Report amazes me, but not as much as it pleases me to be a part of it all.
Thanx for having me over for your discussions. It sure beats playin' cards or rollin' dice. And here, it's not impossible to come away a winner -- EVERY time.

Yes you are right and it takes many kinds of truckers to keep this country moving...BUT there are some iknds that we don't need and I didn't see them here
and remember just because the man is 3 hrs from the house and brings it on in even tho the log book don't allow does not mean he runs hard like ya mentioned im6under...I know those kind of drivers.... its just some men just have goals to see if they can get one more load and that does not mean speeding 80+ down I-70 thats the bull racks .....he is a workaholic what can I say and he intends to be top driver that is his personal goal....but you don't have to burn the candel to do it its is just plugging away and not refusing loads and always being dependalble.......and I truly wish we could all appreciate the shoes the other driver has to wear...take care..had fun

Unfortunately, even running 3 hours over the book can get you into trouble. I have shut down for the break less than an hour from my home. -

Sometimes by choice.
I used to like to spend the night at the
Outpost Truck Stop at the top of the mountain -- on Hwy 395.
Especially if I was only going to drop & hook in Ontario, California at our terminal.
Why fight the traffic for three hours just to go home for 8 hours?
Instead, I call it an early day and shut 'er down in the fresh, desert air for the evening and early, early mornin' -- beFORE the traffic begins.
I've also been at that truck stop long enough to fuel in preparation of a rush assignment in Ontario -- and an hour left to drive if I play by the "rules".
It's noon.
And I won't pick up any hours 'till midnight.
And that would be only two hours.
A twelve hour sit while a driver 1 1/2 hours away is waiting on a "MUST HAVE load in the trailer I'm under -- and goin' to Washington State. We just need to relay the trailer.
Once I'm in Ontario, I'll be off for about 10 days. Or until I wanna go back -- which is usually around 6 or 7 days.
The relay driver was fresh and ready to roll.
And could have climbed the mountain to meet me up on 395 -- but, this was a Friday.
We call it "Git Away Friday". So many folks headin' out of town on Friday -- headin' to Vegas and other destinations -- try to join the commuters who got off work later than the one's who got, what they think is, an 'early' start.
The result is clogged roads, and there ain't but one road to take -- I-15.
On a GOOD day, I suppose I could make the drive in only one hour, in fact, with a triple digit Big truck, I know I COULD.
But that ain't my style.
I'm goin' down that mountain cool, calm and collected. I carefully pick the times when it's the SAFEST to make the trek.
If/When I'm in a good enough condition to git 'er done SAFELY -- and the "book" disagrees --- well, it's decision time.
I'm not a "cowboy" or maverick -- I'm dedicated to git 'er done SAFELY. There were times when multi-millions of dollars were on the line, and depending on MY on-time arrival -- or the show won't go on. Sometimes un-foreseen things pop up that tighten the schedule. That seems to go with the entertainment and trade show and race industries.
We tried to be as prepared for the unknown as we could, knowing it would present itself sooner or later. Each employee worked as a team effort, from office to warehouses to drivers. A BIG benefit to drivin' for a smaller Big truck truckin' company.
IMHO.
MOSTLY, the runs were reasonable.
But every now and then it's hOt and gotta go.
I liked the challenge.
And the compensation for accepting that challenge wasn't bad either.
AfterShock don't work for free.

But, I'm also aware that the "average" Big truck truck driver wouldn't be able to handle that kind of drivin'. And I DON'T mean that as a dig. I appreciate ALL the Big truck truck drivers -- especially those who run local, multi-stops, in big cities.
I go nutz within a year of doin' that as a steady diet.
I gotta have the open road to be really happy. And my preferring to remain OTR for 6 to 9 weeks at a time, then take a day and a half off for every week out, probably made my dispatcher's job a tad easier.
And that paid off in dividends -- in my favor.

For me it was the opposite I live up the hill in the high desert I have spent a number of nights at the terminal in Fontana cause I was short of hours. On a good day I could get back up the hill in 1 hour, but on a Friday night that turns into a 3 hour drive. If my wife could not get down I stay till the am. Finely got smart and left my car at the terminal so I didn't have to wait to get home.

I run a legal log! Why? because I can. and the time is comming when we all will have to. My drops are 90% all at 8am. the crew is ready to unld and all I have to do is fold and stack blankets. its a nich job but suits me. We only have myself and two other hired drivers and the boss drives the other truck. will head for ca later today. you folks have a great day !!!!:smt070:smt072:smt065:smt064
