How about leave the delphi where it is. Leave it on the gauges and cut the speaker wires. Install a single din elsewhere. Car stereo guys can do amazing work making stuff fit and look right. And btw Merry Christmas
Keep us posted. I want to ditch the Delphi in my T880 as well. Bluetooth phone use works fine when stopped, but I can't take phone calls while moving at all. I hate headphones and this truck is quiet enough to use the speakers in the cab for taking calls. Alternatively, if anyone knows how to shut the mute function off I'm all ears. Kenworth says they can't change it.
Thanks again boys and I'll post with pic's when I get it done and all figured out. And yes Bluetooth sucks big time. merry Xmas to all.
I got to thinking about another option: If you use your phone for a music source (Pandora/Spotify/etc), you could have a stereo shop install a Bluetooth amplifier. Off of that amp, they could install better quality speakers in the stock locations and add a subwoofer. This would keep your dashboard intact/stock, yet, you’d have a killer soundsystem far beyond what you can imagine. You’d simply use your phone, or a small remote, to control your stereo.
Ya I was thinking almost along the same lines but was going to keep the head unit in place and replace the 7" stock screen with a Kenwood or Alpine 7" and change out the stock speakers with nice aftermarket ones like you were saying. I've already got a 12" sub with an amp so I'm covered there. I'm just hoping I can disconnect the stock screen without any repercussions as far as the electronics go, the rest should be relatively easy power, speakers, mic for Bluetooth handsfree. And yes Spotify is my music source. I'll still swing by the shop with the truck and tell them what I'm thinking of and see if they have a better idea...
New radio should come with a plug. I made a harness using the new plug, and the Trucks side of the old plug. Replaced Delphi w/ Pioneer radio on my old Freightliner. They sell already made harness adapters. Finding the right one was hard. Radio shop sold me the wrong one. Didn’t need it anyway. Didn’t cut the Trucks harness, only the short adapter harness for radio. I’ve since seen the ready made adapter at Stoops Freightliner in Angola In. $20 on the rack. Not sure who the manufacturer is. Call them, same manufacturer probably makes Kenworth adapters for all the different radios.
New plug that comes with radio will have a blue wire ( I think it’s blue) anyway it’s labeled as being for remote. Disregard it. Has nothing to do with any remote control. It’s for an accessory like a power outside antenna. I’m terrible with electrical and was very intimidated. If I could figure it out, you can too.
Ha Ha!! I just happen to have a picture of the finished product. I just swapped the big plugs. Color matched the wires. Twisted the wires together, and soldered each one. Taped it all up.
