I'd take I-94 to 83 South to 14 West (be sure to follow the truck route through Pierre as there is a low bridge if you don't), then 34 West to 63 South to I-90 West to Rapid City.

Every time this routing comes up, no one mentions Oregon's ridiculous mileage tax, which more than justifies the north route if you're footing the bill. Just something to tuck away in the memory banks.

As opposed to WA's "we're higher than California" fuel tax?

    WA's ~$0.50/gal is still far cheaper than OR's ~$0.24/mile.
Unless your calculator works different than mine?

So it’s basically a toss up once you figure the cost of running the extra miles going north.

I haven't run that way in 15 years, but back then, fuel in Montana was substantially cheaper than the south route, which tipped the scale a bit more. Plus, there were far more options for parking and food running north, and the IPM (idiots per mile) was also much lower up there. Back then, Oregon was also pretty sticky about the 55 mph. It was just a more pleasant trip that justified the few extra miles.

True, most forget orygun is a ton mile tax. Also need to have a fuel permit. Tax registration and fuel permits are by license plate. All scales read the plate. Depending upon what mood the scale person is in, the fines can be stiff.
