I dont remember much about the convoy incident other than what I saw on the news. But it almost seems like the government decided to create a situation so that will never happen again. And now big companies get bigger while making it more difficult for a independent contractor. Just like all the travel centers getting bigger and the smaller business having to shut down.
faux_maestro Thanks this. -
Before deregulation Having an Authority to operate as a Motor Carrier had Enormous value. You just didn't decide to start a trucking company
faux_maestro, LtlAnonymous, x1Heavy and 2 others Thank this. -
Let's see.
Very specific on what you could haul.
Where you could go
The route you took
Took years to get authority, if you even couldx1Heavy, faux_maestro, LtlAnonymous and 2 others Thank this. -
But payment for transportation was due in 7 days. If not you could report them to the ICC. They paid you or they shut them down. You could be a owner OP with a equipment lease to a union carrier. Them guys had no problem grossing well over 100k in the 1970's not accounting for inflation.
already gone, faux_maestro, DougA and 3 others Thank this. -
I can tell you this much, my Father made .31 cpm, pulling doubles in 1980, He made .30 cpm, the last year He Drove, 1998. You do the adjusting for inflation.New Caddy in 1980, $12 k tops, 1998, 24 k maybe? Same with housing,$35k vs $70 k

10,000 dollars was a hell of a lot of money in the 70's But relatively easy to get to if you were enjoying a good income.
If I chose to eat catfood (Paraphrasing) for the year I can probably save 6000. But a proper CTS or equivalent is going to need about a decade of that saving. -
I can't imagine the headaches the owner operator has to deal with today especially when it seems like everyone just wants to take advantage. The government, the customer, the brooker, the mega carrier, the mechanics, And then DOT, insurance, taxes, registration, maintenance, cheap freight and a ice storm in the delivery route. But I guess if you do it for a while it gets easier.
The story in here about the op buying a truck and loosing money and his patience. The advice he was given was harsh. But in fact it was reality.x1Heavy and Deere hunter Thank this. -
Deere hunter, 201, jamespmack and 1 other person Thank this.
