How long do you wait for detention to be added to the rate con?
The broker said it takes from 3 to 10 business days to have detention approved by his customer.
This is first time I'm working with this broker, and I had never waited more than a few hours on the same day of the delivery.
I just don't know what to think. I want to issue an invoice, but I can't since I don't have the correct rate con.
In the contract signed there is no deadline when they can add for detention. But there is a deadline for the invoice which is 15 days. So, I assume it won't take longer than two weeks. But this is strange. Standard invoices are paid in 30 days. So, if they hold it up for extra two weeks, that's 45 days. That's insane.
I believe they make it that way, so carriers don't add for detention. And who knows then collects money for extra time, not the driver.

I've had brokers take a day or 2 but not 3-10. You can go ahead and invoice for the load and then invoice again later for the detention. I've done this a few times. If they don't like that their accounting will let you know, usually, but I wouldn't wait on them. I'd call their AP and tell them what's going on and say you need to invoice the load and start the clock immediately for the original amount on the rate con.
If you're having standard invoices paid in 30 days I'd say you are lucky. In a perfect world that is what is supposed to happen, or at least it's what standard terms usually are (net 30) but my 30 day pays often take longer. I don't sweat it all that much if it's a decent or well known broker. I'm cheap and I wait out full 30 day checks with lots of brokers who don't offer ACH or very low percentage quickpay.
Often times they don't mail checks til well after the 30 days and I see them closer to 40 in snail mail.Beaver9, Short Fuse EOD, The_vett and 3 others Thank this. -
I added mine myself or had them agree to an AP before signing any rate con. You'll never get a dime. You missed your opportunity and they'll never make it right.
Even if they do ultimately pay you, I guarantee it will be nothing more than the average hourly wage of a local driver. Move on and make notes so you know how to handle that broker next time you haul for them.The_vett, Opendeckin and Siinman Thank this. -
It's up to you, but you may want to say the name of the broker, because one of us probably has dealt with them and would understand the situation perhaps better.
I have had brokers that approved my detention within 10 minutes, and I have had others that I had to go round and round with for maybe 2 weeks or so. Mostly because the rep handling it was busy and just didn't get to it and I had to constantly remind them.
First of all, did they outline the terms of detention on the rate con? Did they verbally tell you what the terms were?
I think the most important thing is to make certain you know the proper way to bill them and who exactly to follow up with.
Some of these Brokers it's not just a broker, I'm sure as you know. Some of them you have to call another department or email it somewhere else or whatever that particular Brokers method is and sometimes it's confusing.
If you're certain what their procedure is, I would keep in contact and if you have not received detention in 10 or 12 days whatever it is, then bill them.
I would write on to the bill, that this is the bill for the load and that there's a balance due for detention and you are waiting for approval.
I always looked at detention as a bonus on the load. As I'm sure you know if you get paid for the load and don't get detention get rid of them.
That happened with coyote. I did a load for them and it seemed to me that their whole detention process was overly complicated and designed so that you would not get it, especially until after you had done a few loads for them and figured out what you actually were supposed to do.
Last load I ever hauled for them. -
I never understood the concept of waiting for "detention approval". Your company delayed my equipment that I contracted to you to haul. I'm charging you detention.
I've also told a broker, "I don't have a agreement with your customer. I have agreement with you. I'm charging XYZ broker detention. Not the shipper. Send them a formal invoice also.
50/50 mixed reviews. Works sometime. But if more treated it this way. You won't be sitting around asking to be given what you deserve.
I've also not been paid by people who promised to pay it.
Enough money and a lawyer can make a mess of most broker agreements. But that's a long hard road.CorsairFanboy, Long FLD, Iamoverit and 4 others Thank this. -
I always agreed on detention before the rate con was ever signed... never got paid on it anyways. Goes for tonu as well..I hope u have different experience then me
