New air dryer or just a cartridge? When I did mine I replaced the entire air dryer (AD9) for about $140.

I just put a new cartridge in it. The air dryer is about a year old.

purge valve on the compressor? I am guessing you are talking about the little brass valve. that's not a purge valve. that's releases air so the compressor wont overload. sounds like the governor isn't working. or the purge valve on the air dryer is stuck. if you look at the bottom of the air dryer you'll see the valve. you'll see a 10mm bolt. maybe 9mm. turn the bolt back and forth. sometime that's all it take's. If that doesn't work replace the governor. if that doesn't work go back to the air dryer valve. you can buy a rebuild kit or a new one.

you can eliminate the hose going to manifold & put on a filter kit pulling in outside air if you want. did the transfer on mine long ago would never have it back the way it was.

So the new compressor isn't working the same as the old one? I think you need to figure out what changed and how to get it back to what you had before. Hard to understand what happened since you did two things at the same time. Which compressor did you put on and what air dryer do you have? Some combinations of air dryers and compressors require different valving I'm learning.

It sounds like he probably switched up some lines at the governor. I've never got a rebuilt compressor for a Detroit that would last more than 2 years without throwing oil. I put a Bendix on this last time and it's been great. I also determined a while back it isn't worth rebuilding an air dryer. Swap the whole thing. Of course I hate wrenching on things after I've already wrenched in them.

Here is a typical D2 governor:

The unloader ports goes to the compressor unloader and the dryer purge valve. If your governor is mounted to the dryer, it has a gasket to seal the unloader ports together, the second unloader port goes to the dryer purge valve and plug the 3rd.
The reservoir port is where the air line coming from the wet tank hooks up, the unused ones get plugged.
The exhaust port stays open, some trucks put a shirt hose or filter on it to keep dirt out, but it needs to be vented to atmosphere.godgunscountry Thanks this. -

Thank you all very much for the help. We put a new governor on and there was a port on the compressor that needed plugged. We went back and made sure the dryer was cleaned. Everything is working as it should. Thanks again for your help.
