Check out one of the Google Groups or Facebook groups. I'm sure there are a lot of guys that can give you information that really know those engines.

I can't tell you as much about the reliability of the 92 series, but the 71 and 53 had legendary reliability. As far as I know the 692 was reliable, but some of the early 892 had some problems. You would have to have a mechanic that knows how to set the rack and that type of thing. Or you would have to learn how to do that yourself along with some other maintenance items.

If the engine has really been maintained properly and it's in good shape, at idle it will let only a very very small amount of oil out of the airbox drain tubes. If you have a good one it will surprise you how long it will run and how well it will run. Parts are available for those engines also.

If I knew it was a good running well-maintained engine, I would never hesitate to run a 2-stroke Detroit locally. Especially a 71 series. And no, not every one of them is obnoxiously loud.

Lol haven't heard that one for awhile. My first truck i drove for my dad was a 1970 IH Fleetstar. A 238 with a 13 sp. No air seat, ac or powersteering. Man what a screaming bear. Thats what the older drivers told me to do. (slam hand thing) Remember my ears were ringing- buzzing by the end of the day. It died on a long pull, put a rod through the block.

Buy a box of ear plugs. Don’t park where you don’t want oil spots.
I had a 8-71 power out on a big hill one time,

To tell you the truth at 20 years old and railing thru a thirteen speed in a Kenworth with a 435 Detroit twin straight pipes down Main Street in my town I thought I was coolest guy in the world.

That’s what I thought the first time I fired up an R-model with a rattletrap E-6 under the hood.
