Lol yes sir they will run backwards. Just about stalled mine, and what! its running but something ain't quite right, smoking out the air cleaner. Oh, and those GMC brigadiers, back in the day i could spot one coming at me at night. The headlights would be bouncing, kinda flopping, as their fenders were made quite cheap.

I believe the game you are referring to is called telephone.
But I will say everything I know about the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit comes from driving them.
Back in the day our town was full of trucks and other equipment powered by Detroit 2 stroke diesels so a I had lots of opportunity to drive and hear them.
Heck my dad even had a 440 john deer bulldozer that a little Detroit 2 cylinder in it and it was loud too.
With that being said the sound of a 2 stroke Detroit Diesel is still music to my ears when I hear one coming.
It reminds me of my youth and much simpler timesstillwurkin, bzinger and Ruthless Thank this. -
Ok, that was pretty cool, mostly because of the truck. This is exactly how I'd shift , and he never did get both clubs agin the dash, and with all that shifting, it never went over 5 mph,,,kidding, but it is deceiving, as we couldn't see how fast he was going. I had a '49 Diamond T 201 pickup with that same dash. Reason it's a 4 cylinder, is cooling was a big problem with bigger diesels on these trucks. Couldn't get a big enough radiator behind that awesome grill.

The first 318 I drove was back in the 70s. The boss had two words of advice..."Wind it".
It had 6x4 for boxes and we were running it as an off road logger.
LOL...That was the truck where I first learned about shifting with the jake. If you didn't it would die off so fast on a sudden steep pull you'd wind up in 2nd double under with other trucks gaining on you and the drivers ragging on you on the CB and hating life. -
If it's in good shape it will do you a fine job! Mr. Drake ran a 6V in his cabover back in the 80's, he ran right with us guys with 290 Cummins.BoxCarKidd and Humblepie Thank this.

Keep in mind that a 2 stroke like any other engine needs AIR TO RUN, the blower is gear driven off the crankshaft, when the rpm's of the crank slows so does the blower.... blower slows and air volume/ pressure to the cylinders minimizes. This is why the Oldskool rule of thumb was to keep it wound up.
Is it a 6VN or a 6VT? -
Yes some good heads here..... -
Keep the needle against the pin. Power drops off pretty fast with those.Humblepie Thanks this.

I love their unique sound and it is music to my ears having put a bunch of miles on a 671 and 8v71 69 astro 95 318 13 speed, Sitting in a fish bowl lol. I rebuilt a 8v92 435 for a logger friend of mine with bigger injectors and it was a bada$$ truck on the mountain. Next I built a Cummins 444 out of a 290 big cam that his kid. That he cleaned his old mans clock with lol. Fuel smoke like a freight train when it was cold, I miss them days. That was my side money.

I kind of feel like that too...
