Were 8v149’s ever put in a truck? I see that they’re about 600hp. I know alot of folks are familiar with the 71 and 92 series but the 149 series is significantly larger. Were they just gensets?

I never seen anything in my research over the years that they were ever put in a truck. The 12v71 was big and barely fit in most trucks. The 8v149 dwarfs those. I know in the 1970’s lots of the drilling rigs down here in Tejas had them. They had a great sound. I remember spending many summer vacations on a location with my dad and get woken in the middle of the night when they’d start pulling a trip. Unmuffled days back then and them things would scream and shake the ground.

The cubes of an 8v149(1,192?) are somewhat close to 3408?
Oxbow Thanks this. -
Never heard of the 149 series. I knew you could get some pretty mombo Detroits. I read, mostly mining and marine use. I imagine they fall in the same category as those 800 hp CAT tugboat motors that all the pullers use. I imagine you'd still have to slam your finger in the door to get in the right frame of mind.

It’s 94 cubic inches bigger than a 3408 cat but it’s probably wider because bore is much bigger.
The Detroit has a square bore of 5.75”x 5.75”.Last edited: Jan 24, 2024

3408 dimensions=
Cid=1099.6 round up to 1100
L=62.3”
W=43.64”
H=53.72
8v149
Cid=1192
L=63”
W=63”
H=67”
8v149 is a square bore engine so length and width are kept the same but they are still why to wide and tall to fit in an on the road truck even tho length wise they would.mile marker 27 and Oxbow Thank this. -
They still rev to the stratosphere like the 71’s but with the torque they put out it would be fun in a truck. They were oilfield work horses at any rate.201 Thanks this.

The 3408 that was built for trucks the block had a 75 degree Vee the equipment engine had a 90 degree Vee. They accomplished that by having the connecting rod journals offset 15 degrees.

Would probably need twin steer for that
