well im looking at trading a car I own for a 79' 359 pete I had a couple questions as to how I can distinguish between it being a silver 92? or a green 92'? is there a difference in HP? I know this truck is a 79 for sure and engine is painted silver but I heard the silver 92's weren't introduced till 81' ? engine does have a turbo and blower on it. I also read somewere you can tell the difference if it has a 2 piece intake manifold or 1 piece? but hadn't checked it out. supposedly truck was moved about 40 miles from were it sat for about 2-3 years without being moved. one thing dude said was all he did was put 4 batteries to the thing and it cranked on first start. I was just wondering if there should be anything I should look out for when I goto start truck up? I checked water level in radiator and noticed it was empty, I didn't get a chance to check oil to see if it was milky. are these motors known for doing the water in the oil?when overheated?
once I get it started what should cold oil pressure be at? what should it be once warmed up? also what is normal operating temp for water temp to be at once warmed up? since its a florida truck they might have puled the thermostats if that's even possible to do with these engines?
also another question I have is what should I expect MPG wise on this truck will it was more due it being a v8 and having to rev to 2500 or so thru shifts? pulling a dry van with this truck being flattop would it be any different from the 5mpg or so ive gotten from my 300,315,350,400 ntc cummins and 3406 a&b cat's ? or will it be even less then 5mpg? I know a lot of it depends on trans and rears combo as well as tire size but will it waste more?
any input would be great on this guys as I want to do trade I just don't want to get in on this Detroit if its not worth it. is there still a demand or liking for older trucks with v8 Detroit combos in them?

Yesss.
You and I can be friends.
Firstly. I guarentee its a silver.
Secondly, it sat for three years... And he just jumped in and drove it 40 miles.... #### dude, that's a red flag for me... It's one thing for me to buy trucks that have sat after I've had a chance to go through it first. It's another thing if someone else just cranks it and hammer down.
3.5 to possible 5mpg, no promises though.
I looked at a '79 FLC120 W/ 8v92, liked it for the retro style, guy sold it before I got back into town, but I'm glad, found my 3406B's while floundering.
Share some pics, what's the trade value?Cabover Mike and flc120 Thank this. -
If it been sitting pull the valve covers and check that the rack is free before starting it
antifreeze is probably low because the water evaporated out of it so it been setting a while need to check pH for corrosion
More than likely if the truck was parked for no other reason than they stopped running it I would do a complete fluid change and all filters and pull the wheels and change the seals before trying to pull your first load
If it starts and builds air and holds oil pressure I think you will be okay topping the fluids off to ease it to your shop to get it ready for the road I bought a 1980 Mack and drove 140 miles back to the house with no problems just checked it out real good made sure had clean fuel and spare filters and everything was full just took my time and it was fine
Ended up changing brakes seals fluids fuel transfer pump clutch linkage some air lines and some other minor stuff real nice truck that got a second lease on life -
thanks for the replies guys is there anything I should look for right off the back with these old detroits? blow by? oil psi?
it was running 4 months ago when it was brought to its current location. So its a silver 92 for sure whats the horse power ratings on these engines?
I was unable to get under the rear of the truck but noticed it had either a 8,9 or 10 speed trans by shifter type doesn't have a splitter so im taking it since these detroits like to rev high with one of the above trans on it its going to have a 3.90 or higher gear ratio huh? barring it doesn't have a 9spd over in it dude is totally clueless about trucks thus why Im trading him off a running vehicle. -
i can help a little. detroits love to sing, keep it pinned at 2400 or so, not sure what red line is but thye like to sing. could be lower gears to , odds are no lower(numercialy speaking) than a 3.73.
def want to see pics of this truck too -

Probably around 400hp I'd guess or 425 -
Hi flc, find someone with a front end loader, loosen the bolts, and dump that motor on the pile of all the other "ring-ding" Detroits, and put a real motor in there. Or better yet, just pass on the whole deal, and spend a little more and get something you can make money with right away. I've driven many older trucks with those motors, and they are worthless. 5 mpg, on a good day. and probably a gallon of oil per day. ( not to mention, where the coolant went) Unless you get the truck cheap, I'd keep looking.
flc120 Thanks this. -
Is it worth $1500??
-
Its worth that in scrap value. Go to FB - they're a lot of knowledgeable group pages, who can help you with this.

What, the motor, or the whole truck? The motor, I feel, is worth nothing. You never hear of anyone these days powering their truck with an old Detroit motor. ( not to mention, emission issues in some states)
