Well this has been an interesting read. I have a Fitzgerald with a '95 GK block. It white smokes like crazy and misses on cold start (the missing might be another issue?) I think Fitzgerald built everything with the "hot" parts? The thing is it was rebuilt (of course, actually it passed 500k and still didn't blow up, they just had to torn down for cover leaks) by Detroit so I would assume they of course used the lower compression pistons. I bought it after all of this. It has 150k on the inframe. Just sent out my first oil sample, not using significant oil. Injectors were not changed. Head was, cam...not sure. Running ok otherwise and the smoke doesn't bother me that much. I am interested in longevity and fuel mileage. Getting over 7 mpg average but it's in a T660 and I drive 60 so I'm not all that impressed. I'm running a PP 500 whp tune, which is said to have a DDEC II sort of timing profile. It's not making the boost they normally expect though. The injectors have 700k on them...
As far as which kit to get. The 16.5 kits I’ve seen have wristpins w/ snap rings. You would need to change the rods, still wouldn’t have oil squirters, unless block is after May 98, I believe. I’ve heard some rods are drilled with an oil passage. I thought they were 14L rods. But Someone recently claimed they have 12.7 drilled rods.I don’t think so, but worth finding out. If you’ve had the inframe done, only need to buy pistons/ rods. Don’t need the whole kit.Mine is a BK, Supposedly has had a Lo nox OH 12 yrs ago. It may just have the sticker, and wasn’t ever done . I wonder. Just had another OH, Never had white smoke problem. It has 16.5:1s. Wristins/ snap ring. Hard to believe the 15:1 pistons are the cause of the smoke. Got to be a Lo nox timing issue.
Just a Question do you know which models have the 15.1 compression from Factory ? is it the GK and PK or are there more model that have ?
For ddec 4, BK and MK both have 16.5:1, TK and PK and HK have 15:1 except HK marine engines which have 16:1. Everything ddec 3 and earlier had 15:1. This is what i've observed from the Detroit parts program. There may be exceptions.
NP obvoisly you have had your hands into programming too do you work for a Company or are you just your own show ? What is your opinion on the white smoke issue can this be cured by changeing the Injection timing (BOI) ? Or is there really no Cure for this issue ? I once had an MK that was able to cure by changeing timing but you say those dont have the low compression on them so i am not versed on the low compression ones wheather timing change will fix it Maybe this is not the appropriate Place to discuss this i dont have enuf posts yet to PM you
Still have not had truck in to get the 16.5 to see if that will help. But it’s using oil. And enough at that.
