he rule enables a certified medical examiner (ME) to grant an individual with ITDM a Medical Examiner’s Certificate, MCSA-5876, for up to 12 months. To do so, the treating clinician – the healthcare professional who manages, and prescribes insulin for, the treatment of the individual’s diabetes – provides the ITDM Assessment Form, MCSA-5870, to the certified ME indicating that the individual maintains a stable insulin regimen and proper control of his or her diabetes. The certified ME is then responsible for determining if the individual meets FMCSA’s physical qualification standards and can operate CMVs in interstate commerce.
End qoute there is about 5000 drivers involved.
The particular diabetes diagnosis that was previously a no go, sometimes has a form of Coma that can kill. You do not want to be going into this coma in a 40 ton 18 wheeler at 65 mph. You will kill people.
The main thing is if you can get a signed note from a doctor willing to attach his or her name and issued license number to that note to give to your DOT doctor to certifiy to that person for a 1 YEAR card and continue the treatment and show that it's controlled you can continue to recertify annually.
I don't know of any doctor in my area willing to commit to that. If you drop they get taken out.
This is not a get out of jail free card where you can do whatever for 20 years and never see anyone but a DOT clinic for 15 minutes every 2 years. You are still being monitored in case the treatment medicine you are on fails to control your situation.
That's pretty easy to do if you cannot access food or if the medicines freeze in a dead truck in winter or some other common problem.
The good thing is that there is a chance. A small one to do something almost a year. At least once.Rideandrepair and Iowalobertarian Thank this. -
