I have a friend who want to drive truck.. his sugar use to be around 403 or so.. I mean it was horrendous. Now he's on meds and on a high protein low carb, low sugar diet.. and his sugars are at 200 to 171.. If he took the DOT exam and on meds for his sugar, is he ok, or does he need to get it down more?
I mean the good news is that its coming down.. but i wonder if DOT will go for it?

I believe it just has to be under 200 (per dot regs) but really for his health's sake he should be a 100 to 150 on a consistent basis. I have type 2 diabetes (non insulin) and am averaging 120 over the last 30 days. He really needs to concentrate on no sugars, low carbs and lower portions. I am still 90 lbs overweight and losing weight just watching how much and what I eat and I only drink lots of water. It wont be the DOT that has the say, it will be the doctor performing the exam and his A1C level (which shows his past average sugar level) might be tested as thats how they really prove that its under control. How long ago was he diagnosed with it?
-
he was diagnosed around the first week of september
-
he took a bodybuilders approach.. my friend is 6'2 271 pounds.. he lost like 8% fat and only dropped a pound in a month
-
They'll test his urine and it has to be below 200 before the alarms go off. He can fast that morning with no sugar and probably pass.
But he really needs to see a doctor. Diabetes is nothing to fool with and one needs to educate them self on it. Numbers like you posted his A1C is probably in the 8-9 range which is considered uncontrolled diabetes and disqualifying under DOT regulations.
Going on the road can make it worse as it's harder to eat well plus you are stuck in the drivers seat most of the day.Mommas_money_maker Thanks this. -
yes, you are correct, he eats like 6 or seven times a day.. small meals like 6 egg whites, brown rice and grapefruit ect.. but he went from 400 to 182 in a month.. i mean thats pretty good

Yes that is very good and his numbers will come down to where mine are now with more time. I stay away from fruit and rice and really concentrate on the veggies. He is still in what they call the uncontrolled stage as he was recently diagnosed and basically just started to get it somewhat controlled.
I do 5 to 6 small meals and test my sugar in the morning and then either before lunch, dinner, bedtime. I take Metformin at the same times each day and drink lots of water. Its been about 4 months since I have been diagnosed and am now running good consistent numbers. I used to visit the doctor every 2 to 3 weeks and am now down to once a month since my numbers are consistently down and so is my weight. I have lost 48 lbs in the past 6 months and still going, thats how dramatic my changes have been, no sugar, no potatoes, no rice. You can eat at McDonalds if you know what to eat and how much. Good luck to him and also tell him nice job but I would wait longer and make sure that its consistently under control. -
What would be a good time for him to go to school, Diagnosed on Sept 7th.. what month should he suggestively go?
-
His A1C level would be the determining factor. A1C numbers are based upon the last 2 to 3 months blood glucose levels. So for example he is running about a 185.5 avg (per your numbers above) for the last 30 days and then he goes another 30 days with a lower avg like a 150 then that will put him at about 167.7 average over the last two months. So his A1C number should be good enough to pass at that point in theory as like I said, its 2 to 3 months worth. If its only been 30 days that hes had it lowered then probably about another 60 days so his A1C is in the proper range and wont be found medically disqualified.

The A1C numbers are between 20 and 0. You are looking for the number 6 but as long as it is below 9 you are okay. You can buy a home A1C test made by Bayer at the local pharmacy for around 30 or so. It has two test. Take the first one. If it is above 9 it will take some time to come down. Wait 30 days and take it again. Cut out all sugars and Pop.
My A1C went from 15 plus to under 6 in two months. My blood sugar, I do not measure on a day to day basis because I do not care that much. I have already changed my diet and eating habits all I am going to. I have lost all the weight I am going to. Day to day numbers only sell day to day testing strips. Once every two or three months tells you if the plan is working. Mine is. Women find me sexy and they are correct.Big Rig Boi, Mommas_money_maker and gdyupgal Thank this.
